Sorry to start a separate thread, but I didn't want to get this specific topic buried in the 55-going-on-90-page Maddux trade thread.

Has anybody heard what gives with the cash?

I've seen reference to Cubs picking up most of Maddux's remaining salary this year, plus others referring to the Cubs giving the Dodgers $1 (some accounts) or $2 (other).

I'm guessing the Cubs picking up part of Maddux's contract and the $2 payoff are the same thing? The Cubs are sending over $2, because that is the salary differential for the rest of this year? And then Hendry is fully responsible for Izzy's contract next year and beyond?

My understanding is that the Cubs are covering $2M of Maddux's contract this year and picking up Izturis' full contract next year (and beyond).

Wait, wait...

Are you saying the Cubs are picking up Izturis' option in 2008 as part of this deal?

No, but there's the $300K buyout at the very least.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Hendry pick up the option, though.

What does Izturis' contract look like next year?

He's due $4.15 million next year, and there is a $5.45 million option for 08 with a club buyout for $300k.

If they have a new GM, hopefully that guy would pay the buyout. But at this point, I'd have to say I'd be shocked if Hendry didn't pick up that option. He'll probably offer to increase the salary as well.

I just looked up his #'s and he is a similar, if not worse, hitter than Neifi. If Hendry was looking for a good glove at SS who couldn't hit, why not just let Neifi start and save the $4M? What the heck is going on with Jim Hendry?

Well that's just dumb.

We all know that Hendry is already trying to work out a five year extension for Izturis that comes with a complete NTC.

For that kind of speed and defense he should be making at least $8 mil a year. God we're awesome.

Could this be considered a salary dump by the Dodgers? He had one good year and then his hitting went Neifi like. A 302 obp the last 2 years. Neifi looks like a bargain if Izturis doesn't get back to his 2004 form. The Dodgers even got money back in the deal. The 4 million the Dodgers saved for Izturis next year could be used to sign Lugo.

words cannot express the level of rising anger I feel at one Jim Hendry at the thought that we'll be paying both Neifi Perez and Caesar Izturis next year.

No,it's not really a salary dump. They just have a lot of minor league talent and with the signing of Furcal and trade to get Lugo they have no need for him.

Plus, he did have TJ surgery.

So money wasn't their major reason.

Izturis 2004 is basically Juan Pierre 2006 except with more strikeouts and less stolen bases.

Considering that Baker will likely be calling the shots once again, it's nearly certain that 2007 will be every bit the hell that 2006 was, or worse.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.
