The Houston Chronicle's Richard Justice reports that Astros owner Drayton McLane has ordered GM Tim Purpura to trade Brad Lidge.

The Rangers are the team getting mentioned in connection with Lidge, but if he has to go, there will be more interested parties, starting with the Mets and Red Sox. The Astros could turn over closing duties to Dan Wheeler if they move Lidge.

Well that should do loads for his trade value. That's straight from the Sammy Sosa/Corey patterson school of trading.

With little more than 3 hours to do it. Right now Purpura is wondering why he accepted this job.

As I mentioned in another thread, McClane also supposedly ordered Purpura to shop Oswalt for Tejada. These crazy rumors are fun to follow.

It seems the air in Houston has savaged Mr. McClane's cognitive abilities. Either that or he realizes his team stinks and he wants to save money.

If you read the rest of the article it says Justice found out about the orders from an official from another team. I'm sure the Astros didn't want that information let out. Don't know why the official from another team would find out that info (must be a massive leak), but the Astros are stuck in a PR nightmare right now with the news that Oswalt and Lidge might be on the trading block.

How about this complicated deal....

Ramirez and Aardsma to the Astros for Ensberg and Lidge.

The Cubs could then trade Dempster elsewhere.

how about Ramirez and Navoa for Lidge and Ensberg

I think we'd be getting hosed in both of those deals.

McClain likes local boys. (see Berkman, Pettitte, and Clemens.) Aardsma played at Rice and lives in the Woodlands. I think he'd have more value to the guy that seems to be ultimately calling the shots here.

If Ramirez is going to opt out, it's something to think about.

No thanks. Ramirez is a lot better and 3 years younger than Ensberg. Lidge would be nice, but not worth the difference between Ramirez and Ensberg in my opinion. However, if Ramirez is believed by Hendry to want to opt out, then maybe you do it.

Exactly. I'm of the opinion he is opting out. If he is, this trade replaces him in the short and maybe the long term. It also gives you a hellova closer in Lidge...and creates a nice bargaining chip in excess bullpen arms in Lidge, Dempster, Howry, etc.

If Ramirez will not opt out or will negotiate an extension, then the Cubs pass. Hendry hopefully would have a clear understanding of Aramis' intentions.

It's not like if he opts out he's definitely gone. The Cubs would still be the favorites to get him. The one thing they have is money to spend, they just don't have many good free agents to go out and get.

How about the Cubs trade Aramis and Aardsma for Lidge and Ensberg. Turn around and trade Ensberg to San Diego for Kottaras and then trade Dempster to the Rangers for one of the DVD boys.

Who?
