...says Shawn Reid of the Sporting News.

Coming from a Royals fan, I would expect sour grapes. It seems that many from KC have a general loathing for St. Louis, and I'm not really sure why.

And the whole "best fans in baseball" silliness is not something that every Cardinal fan touts like it's a fact. Granted, some idiots do, but certainly you can't lump the morons in with intelligent fans. Every team has intelligent fans, every team has idiots. Such is life.

As for the throwing the ball back after home runs, I agree that it's stupid to be done in Busch. But it doesn't happen after every home run. In fact, I've only seen it done twice. Talk about making a mountain out of a mole hill.

I thought you all might dig this, even though I think it's pretty wrong.

I could see how somebody could learn to loathe the Yankees after living amongst their fans for a while, so it wouldn't surprise me if somebody who had a mild fondness for the Cardinals would temper, or reverse those feelings after living amongst Cards fans.

Sorry to say this, but I agree.

Kansas City has an inferiority complex to St. Louis like St. Louis has one to Chicago. This "article" (actually a blog) would read no different if a St. Louis native moved to the North Side of Chicago, a San Francisco native moved to LA or a Boston resident moved to New York.

Except for the fact that the teams you mentioned (STL/CHC, SF/LA, BOS/NYY) are all big time rivals whose fans don't like each other. I would hardly consider two teams in opposite leagues that play 6 times a year to be rivals. A good comparison would be an Oakland A's fan moving to San Francisco.

More like an A's fan moving to LA.

What about an Angels fan moving to San Diego?

no history of competition between the clubs (that I can remember). At least KC and STL have 85 between them, just like the Dodgers and A's in 88.

Yes.

An A's fan 10 miles away in San Fran? Not a big deal; I have friends from SF who are A's fans and friends from the East Bay who are Giants fans.

Obviously there are going to be people that like both the A's and the Giants just like there are people who like both Chicago teams and both New York teams. But I know way more A's or Giants fans that don't really like the other team or just downright hate the other team. I know way more A's fans that would pull for the Dodgers over the Giants than the other way around.

Oh yeah, my friends like one of the Bay area teams but don't like the other. My point is that the two cities/teams are too close for there to be a similar comparison as a KCer moving to St Louis or an Oaklander moving to LA.

This goes beyond the absolute bull crap that was 1985 and Dekinger. This is, as previously mentioned, an inferiority complex. It involves not just baseball, but football and most heatedly college basketball.

Kansas City, though in Missouri, has a lot of Kansas affiliation beyond the name.

Ask some of our resident Mizzou alum/students how they feel about the Jayhawks.

Why then is there constant graphics on the scoreboards and whatnot that read "Best Fans In Baseball - Sporting News"? That and the whole "Baseball Heaven" thing bothers me too... really the new Busch is just a new park just like any other.

Ah, ok. You were addressing the location part of it. I agree with this assessment.

I think the core of the rivalry has nothing to do with sports.. I think it has more to do with the fact there are two large cities in MO on opposite sides of the state, and neither is markedly better than the other, so a rivalry was born.

Couple that with the fact StL people are very proud of their city and like to condescend to others about it, and KC folks become naturally defensive. Since it's smaller, they also do have an inferiority complex. There's also a lot of inter-state politicking between the cities, where both cities have lobbied for stuff at the expense of the other. (KC's new stadium deal was the most recent. I believe Enterprise, a StL company, did some heavy lobbying to stop KC from getting their new arena.)

The sports are just a natural progression. The fact the world series was lost on a super controversial call exacerabted the situation. Then StL got another football team, and they quickly got better than the Cheifs (KC's major source of pride) and things got worse.

To me, the KU/Mizzou thing is pretty low on the list for reasons for the rivalry for a few reasons.

•Stl is more of a pro sports town than college sports.

•StL's college sports loyalties are severely divided. Mizzou has the most alums, but UI and KU have large contingents.

•KC is also split. It's dominated by KU, but there are tons of Mizzou fans, too. They even get regular home coverage in the paper. There are also 7 or 8 K-State fans.

Whatever the source, though, there is a huge city rivalry between the two, and KC does have an inferiority complex.

The Best Fans in Baseball = Cardinal Fans routine is nauseating. Maybe the fact that Joe Buck and LaRussa are figure-heads of these fans bother me as well.

It's all hyperbole from the marketing department. No different than "Titletown USA" or "America's Team" or "the House that Ruth Built"

not sure if this was mentioned anywhere, but it was in pretty poor taste to boo Utley and the official scorer for ruling a single. wasn't too long ago Cardinal fans were patting each other on the back for cheering Griffey's 500th like other fans wouldn't have done the same.

glad Utley got another chance and got a cleaner single.

They were booing the ruling of a hit, not Utley as a player.

Not that it matters in any way if they did. Cubs fans are 100% classy as well I'm sure. Booing guys like Pujols every time he bats.

Every fan base is like this, there is no use acting like it's isolated to one or that one is better than another.

Your vendetta is laughable.

No Wolfie, when your arch rival's star is booed, that is a sign of respect. The players love it - same as cheers to them. Just like when Sosa was lustily booed at Busch (pre-corking incident).

now you're just making things up. what vendetta might that be? I simply pointed, in a thread about the obnoxiousness of Card fans, that they committed a pretty tasteless act the other night.

what is laughable is your vendetta against me, as evidenced by this post. you make no real point, you just want to attack me and try to make me look bad. I believe I used the word sophomoric once to describe such behavior. maybe it should be downgraded to 'seventh grade-ic.'

to me the Card fans booing the official scorer was sort of like republican politicians committing adultery or getting busted for corruption. it is worse because so many of them run around espousing 'holier than thou.' if you don't, fantastic. it doesn't change the fact that a large number of them do.

your assessment of booing Pujols everytime he comes up is a figment of your imagination. and even if they did, Cub fans don't run around enmasse saying they are the best fans in baseball.

They're not booing, they're "Pu-ing."

I don't think Cubs fans are booing Pujols as much as they're trying to drown out the Cadinals fans cheering of him.
