Bottom 5TH B:4 S:1 O:2

Matt Murton walks. Juan Pierre scores. Michael Barrett to 3rd. Phil Nevin to 2nd.

I hate to beat a dead horse, but geez, what an idiotic statement.

Yes indeed, just uber-idiotic. And who can ever forget Walker's walkoff walk against the Sox Jul 4 2004, completing the sweep ... good times.

In this instance, a walk is much greater than a routine grounder to SS. One less out, bases still loaded, 1 more run on the score board and someone else with an opportunity to keep the inning alive.

I can't think of any instance where a routine grounder to the SS would be better than a walk.

if there were runners on 2nd and 3rd and the ss bobbled it, two runs would score. that would be better than a walk.

Well, I doubt the runner on second would score on a bobble, but I see what you're saying there. One run would score which is better than a walk scoring no one.

I've seen Cedeno airmail a routine grounder into the 1st base side box seats. I'm sure other SS's could do it too.

You could score all the way from 1st on a ball thrown in the dugout. Mark Bellhorn did in a game vs. St. Louis in 2002. He was on 1st, someone hit a ground ball to the 2B. He threw to 2B, Horn was safe, ball was thrown into the dugout. Bruce Kimm said b/c they threw to 2B, and he was safe, he already had the base and therefore should be allowed to score. He was right.

I'm starting to get the sense that Dusty Baker has no idea what the hell he's talking about.

:D

That made my morning. I owe, I owe, so it's off to work I go.
