Shut Down Lee?

My brother saw or heard a quote that they examined Lee's arm, and it's not any worse from playing, but it's not getting any better.

It seems (I could be wrong) like he still winces sometimes, especially on outside pitches. If it does hurt, then playing partially injured could have many effects. It could hurt his confidence. Pain could cause him to alter his mechanics. And of course, worse case, it prevents full recovery.

So does it make any sense to keep running him out there? How about showcasing Nevin for a week or two, then sitting Lee for another 1-2 weeks if necessary. Last thing we need is this injury carrying over to 07.

At the very least, he should be splitting time with Nevin and/or Walker at first instead of playing almost every day.

I wouldn't be opposed to sitting him for a week or two and letting Nevin/Walker try to showcase themselves for a trade and allowing Lee to further recover.

To go even further, he should be shut down if there is even the slightest concern that playing could cause further and/or permanent damage.

I say let Lee pinch hit until the season is over. He'll be ready by spring. Then, we can see that the injury hasn't really healed and he'll be Woody part 2.

Besides...this will give Baker another excuse if Lee is out for the rest of the year and Hendry can give him a chance with the horses in 2007. This organization is built on excuses so let's let them run with them.

If he is hurt I would most certainly shut him down. Whats the point of playing him. If Dusty is playing him to keep his job, just another reason why he needs to be fired today.

On a side bar kind of on subject. Would keeping Phil Nevin next year be a bad idea. If he could be had for 2 mill, I think he would be a good guy to have on the bench. A lot better than what we had. I know he isnt a good defensive player but can play all 4 corners if need be, be a 3rd catcher. RH power hitter. Hits lefties well. I know we will trade him but wouldnt he be an interesting pick up for our bench next season

I would like to see them shut down Z, Prior, Lee, Aramis, and Barrett. Hell, shut down everyone and mix-and-match players from West Tenn and Iowa to fill out the roster.

Don't we have three 1Bmen in Iowa/West Tenn? I know they've been struggling, but isn't wiser to shut down DLee. We also have several Catchers between AA and AAA. Like you said, bring them up! Bring in the kids!

I also think--and I think Mike Kiley wrote this--be both sellers AND buyers. Go out and get young guys to play the rest of this year, and get one young vet to build this team around.

But, mainly, it's time to bring up the kids.

If he's willing to accept a bench role and is used properly, I'd have no problem with it. It would be nice to have some right-handed power off the bench. My biggest concern would be similar to several people's concerns about Neifi...how would the manager use him? Even Neifi can be useful* as the 25th man on the roster, if he's not being trotted out there for 3-4 starts per week.

*not $2.5 million/year useful...just useful

Beat me to it. At least Hill would get some starts that way.

Is shutting down uninjured players really going to help them get ready for next season? They should go easy on Zambrano, Ramirez, and Barrett, but why would you shut them down? They'd still have to catch up from their inactive period, and that could cause some problems.
