I was told before he left with the arm cramp, Guzzy's slider was the best it had been in quite a long time.

The kid (and he is still a kid) is starting to look like the Angel Guzman I saw in 2003. If he stays healthy, this kid is going to be REALLY special.

I seem to recall some very impressive curves that he unleashed in Cactus League games, but it was inconsistent (of course, it was only March). But that's good to hear. It's been hard to judge his season so far since he hasn't made more than 4 consecutive starts at Iowa without going up to the majors, but considering he's healthy, it's hard not to be optimistic about him.

A little more on Guzman:
Cubs.com"]Pitcher Angel Guzman (3-4, 4.01 ERA) had to leave his last start because of cramps in his forearm, but Quade said the right-hander could start Sunday. The problem was dehydration. Guzman has scrapped his curve and is sticking with his slider. Quade said the young pitcher also is throwing regularly at 93, 94 mph.

Very interesting. I like the move from curve to slider. Guzman has struggled with his control, with a lack of movement on his fastball, and on scary FB/GB ratios earlier.

I think slider is easier to throw for strikes, easier to throw for contact (other night notwithstanding), easier to get groundouts on, easier to avoid hangers. I hope it works for him.

If Guzman doesn't see the big league rotation before September, will the Cubs shut him down when Iowa's season finishes and end his season early? Or will they try to get him some starts?

Iowa is only 5 back in the playoff race for the American North, so it is conceivable they could even make the playoffs.

Guzman is out of options after this season.

Nope. He will be granted a fourth year of options due to the time missed to injuries.

Wow, I didn't know MLB did that, but that's cool.

Yay:
Cubs.com"]Minor matters: Angel Guzman struck out eight over 3 2/3 innings in Triple-A Iowa's 5-4 loss to Oklahoma on Tuesday, but he had to leave the game because of cramps in his forearm. Cubs athletic trainer Mark O'Neal said the problem was dehydration.

Phew.

Maybe he went out drinking the night before with Spier?

This is good news. I was wondering if the Cubs had him sit the bench because he was injured.
