Blow this whole thing up. I want pitchers who PITCH on this team. I don't blame Wood and Prior for being so injury-prone, but this team cannot afford to keep around this type of liability.

hurt himself durning BATTING PRACTICE-WTF WTF WTF

Cubs pitcher Mark Prior was scratched from Sunday's scheduled start because of a strained left oblique, which happened during batting practice the day before.

I've been saying it since the end of May...shut Prior down for the year. This season is so far from being worth pushing him out there it's not even funny. Do what needs to be done to let him heal and rehab, give him some minor league starts, but work with the idea that he does not need to be ready at ANY point this season. I don't give a crap what Prior can do this year...if he can get healthy, all I care about is the future. Pushing him out there now when he's clearly not healed from whatever the hell is going on is stupid and wrong and unecessary.

Paul Sullivan in the Trib[/url]"]

Mark Prior was scratched from Sunday's start against Milwaukee with a strained left oblique muscle that he said he injured while taking batting practice on Saturday.

"The goat is starting to look real," Prior said, referring to the Billy Goat Curse.

I can't even quote the rest, it's too absurd. It involves realizing he was injured while getting up off a couch and another sneezing story.

It's not a good thing that Prior is starting to believe in curses.

Agreed.

Also agreed that the focus on this year should be getting him healthy and ready to go for next season. I wish I had more confidence in the Cubs' ability to do that.

From the same article linked above.

Trainer Mark O'Neal said Prior's injury could be problematic, and he could be placed on the disabled list. ... "I hope after four days it'll be alright," [Prior said].

You'd think the team would have invested in anti-allergy medication for everyone after Sammy's bout with the cripplin'-sniffles.

Dusty realized that with a guranteed split in Milwaukee his job was already safe. Watch Rusch pitch lights out for the 3 of 4 series season-turnaround extension.

Thats what I'm afraid of too..

Me three!

That would make sense if it were the same injury, but this is a new injury, one that has nothing to do with his previous ones.

Maybe. I'm not saying this is the same injury from 1, 2 or 3 years ago, but I do think everything is related. It starts with being overused in 2003, then having to compensate for the achilles on top of that, then the freak injuries and having to adjust for those and now the sickness-filled off-season. It seems like he needs the time to get things back into place and heal fully. This would be the perfect season to do such a thing with a pitcher that is still very young, has massive potential and talent, and could anchor your team's starting staff for the better part of a decade at least if handled right at this point.

I think it's time to trade Prior for what we can get. With all the young pitching prospects ready for Wrigley in 2007 (e.g., Gallagher, Guzman, Marmol, Marshall, and Wells), I believe it's time for the Cubs to move in a new direction.

And we can rely on Gallagher, Marmol, Marshall, and Wells being "solid" even less than we can rely on Prior being healthy.

You ought to keep Prior since his value is low right now, but you need to sign a stud FA pitcher (or two) in the offseason.

I'm pretty sure he will be fine. If you read the article, the injurt doesnt seem bad. Prior is more fusterated then anything.

Then again, its Prior.

This year should prove to Cubs fans the folly of relying so heavily on pitching prospects who are good, but not can't miss ace guys. A lot of these guys have shown flashes and potential, but none of them have been ready to step up and contribute positively and consistently.

As things stand right now, Prior and Zambrano are the only guys guaranteed to be in the rotation next season. I can't see this team re-signing Wood for the rotation, nor do I think Maddux will return. Lord help us all if Glendon is given another shot. That leaves three spots open. If Prior is traded, there will be four spots to fill.

I don't think it would be wise to come into the season with at least two spots filled by rookie/young pitchers who are either unproven commodities (Gallagher, Wells) or who have only shown flashes at this point (Hill, Marshall, Marmol). That's a really dangerous proposition.

The worst thing you can do is trade Prior while his value at an all time low.

This is why Jason Schmidt is a MUST for the Cubs this offseason.

Agreed. I think getting Zito or Schmidt is necessary not because this team needs an ace, but because this team needs a guy who can go out and give the Cubs 180+ innings along with good numbers. I'm worried about Schmidthead's overuse and recent injuries, but getting him at a good price would be most welcome.

I don't think I can accurately describe the emotions one has when they go to a game expecting to see Mark Prior and in the pre-game they see a rotund lefty walking with Rothschild to the bullpen area in the same manner as the starting pitcher always does....

Worked out in the end, but this just means more Glendon the starter and 9 times out of 10 that a baaaad thing.

Yesterday's game could be a good thing, if it helps the Cubs move Glendon along before next season.

As for the Prior injury, DAMM YOU CHICAGO TRIBUNE FOR DISTRACTING MARK PRIOR AND MAKING HIM GET HURT!
