Didn't see another thread on this - apologies if I missed it:

In fact, multiple baseball executives say that at some point Baker had the chance to sign an extension but passed it up. Those execs say that within the last few months Cubs management put a deal worth $4-4.5 million a year on the table. For whatever reason, Baker declined to sign.

I actually would not be surprised. The timing of Hendry's extension was stupid. Why wait to see how the team rebounds from last year and then give the extension so early, when you haven't learned anything. And Hendry had shown nothing but absolute love for Baker up until very recently. Every beat writer insisted there was a deal that was out there but it was waiting to be announced.

And every story about Dusty suggested he hated Chicago, couldn't handle the criticism, and wasn't long for this job. It would be very poetic if our only way out of the Dusty mess was for Dusty to walk away.

"Dude, after expecting to win the WS this season, I figured I would be able to bilk Jim out of a contract for 4 years at 6 mill annually!" I didn't want to hedge my position and selling out for a such a small pitance for one year! I thought the mother load was coming!

Sincerely, Johnny B

I wish they would honor Dusty's wishes.

It makes no sense to me whatsoever.

If it is true he declined the offer for an extension.

If his team is playing terrible and he won't be around next year anyway

Then, why not get rid of him and get on with whatever the future holds?

Hendry is doing everything he can to talk him into returning?

Money! Why are Neifi and Rusch still on this team?

Neifi is on this team because he must have pictures of Dusty with a goat or something...Glendon? Who knows...maybe the food consumption budget wasn't met this year. Actually, those two year contracts are a bitch aren't they? Damn...

I just saw the same article and was going to start a thread about it when I noticed one was already started. That may explain his recent statements about him not being concerned about his future: In his own mind his future did not include continuing as Cubs manager. If he himself doesn't want to return, and it's woefully obvious that a change is needed, there simply is no reason not to make a change at the All-Star break (OK, there would be ONE reason, and that would be if the change were to be made sooner :D ).

Dusty says no. From Cubs.com:

"I'll go on the record right now to tell you that's a lie," Baker said on Friday of the story. "A big lie. A bold-faced lie, like my dad used to say. Never. Never. Never came up, never offered, never said, never declined. The answer to all of the above is never."

I think Dusty may be telling the truth. Can't make a better denial than that.

what does his dad have to do with it? Did he say never to the extension or never that the extension existed? Is Dustys dad alive?

this whole mess just seems to get stranger by the day
