There will be a fan riot if they trade Z. I think many people from this board will be leading it. He's one player the Cubs MUST keep at all costs.

I hope you weren't being literal here :P

Close to literal, but not quite. If we could arrange a multi-team trade where we'd get Pujols, Arod, Delmon Young, and Felix Hernandez I'd probably trade him and start making plans for next year's World Series. :D

Trading Carlos would be a top ten dumbest decision of all time for the Cubs, and I don't see how trading him for ANY number of prospects. No way. Trade Maddux, trade Barrett, trade JJ, trade anyone but Aram, DLee, and Carlos...

Will someone explain to me why this would be smart baseball? The Cubs do enough dumb crap without trading their only reliable pitcher. Maybe it's me, maybe I'm the dumb one (don't ask ex wife that question)

It would be smart if they got equal or greater value in return. But the odds of getting that are very slim.

Trading Carlos Zambrano for Bernie Williams = dumb baseball

Trading Carlos Zambrano for Miguel Cabrera = not so dumb

Trading Carlos Zambrano for Joe Mauer + Francisco Liriano = smart, smart baseball (not happening, but it would be smart)

No other team is going to trade any of those players you guys mentioned for Z. Can we stay on the topic of realistic trade possibilities? Trading Carlos is smart, obviously, if you get Pujols for him, but that's not going to happen...and that's my point. Trade Z and it's one step forward, two steps back. I shudder when I think of Hendry doing that, and he won't, because as much as we criticize the guy, he's not stupid.

The thing is to me if you can improve your team anyone is tradeable. Fans would have went nuts if the Cubs traded Sosa and others in 99 but IMO it would have been a great move if they got an Abreu and Rolen for him or some other younger impact players. I think Z is a wonderful pitcher but if you can improve 2 or 3 postions by making a deal I say do it.

Those were just examples of how it would not necessarily be stupid to trade Zambrano, just as you asked. If a player of Z's stature came available, I think you'd be surprised what names would fly around in an attempt to get him.

First: If the Cubs were to trade Zambrano (TEAMS WOULD BE LINING UP) the organization might as well do a complete sweep, and trade off the team and rebuild, ala the Marlins.

Second: Zambrano is going to re-sign in the offseason. Because unlike KW, Z keeps himself in good baseball shape, and has spend very little to no time on the DL (how he does it, i haven't the clue). Which means it would behoove the Cubs to keep Carlos in Chicago for a LONG TIME, if not his whole career.

Third: Depending on what Hendry does in the offseason (should he land Lee and Zito?), the Cubs figure to be more competitive in 2007, and trading Zambrano would be a horrific move (without screwing the other team) and tremendous PR disaster.

My guess is...Zambrano will be a Cubs for a VERY long time.

"John Smoltz, Greg Maddux, Livan Hernandez, Carlos Zambrano, Barry Zito and Dontrelle Willis are the starters who supposedly will be made available prior to the July 31 trading deadline."

Who knew? I think it's the first time, I have seen Carlos' name in any paper w.r.t. to trade bait.

The Daily is pumping for a LA team to Z! Yellow journalism at its finest.

Of course if the Dodgers or Angels want to give the Cubs their top 5 prospects Hendry ought to think about it. If those 5 are overall top 50 guys that is.

If the Angels were to offer Weaver, Wood, and Kendrick, I'd help Z pack. Short of something like that, I'll be first in line to form the lynch mob going after Hendry.

In general - trading Big Z for 2 everyday ML's and 2 top prospects would be ok if we had different management in place. I lack total confidence in the management to put a plan together to develop prospects if Crusty is still here.

I really think Dusty's as good as gone. The only question is whether the hammer drops at the All-Star break or the end of the season.

Agreed. Cubs brass are showing ineptitude by not making a decision on direction they wish to go. Thye would get more respect by fans if they decide to eihter - develop young players w/ a mix of solid veterans - or blow it up. Either way, Dusty's skills (or lack thereof) doesn't fit the bill.
Posted
At times this team looks like it needs to be blown up completely and started from scratch. However, Zambrano is the last piece that would go, and it would take an equally young, talented, and potentially great player to land him. I see maybe 2 of those players around baseball...Cabrera and Pujols. Unless someone absolutely blew me over with a package of guys I feel can help next year and beyond, I don't even consider it.

Chad Billingsley, Matt Kemp, Scott Elbert, and Joel Guzman would be a nice starting point.

Wow dealing Z would make the big league team completely unwatchable.

I'm done if Zambrano is traded. No realistic trade for Zambrano will be good enough to consider.

I'll never forget the haul Von Hayes brought in. If Z did bring in the players like that you wouldn't want them instead? I wouldn't trade him either but I'd listen to offers. Also, what guarentee do we have he'll stay when he's eligible for free agency?

Agreed. The LA Times is trying to start a rumor, that isn't even out there. They think that because the Cubs are nearing the Pirates/Royals levels that the Cubs would be look to "dump" salary. If it was KC/Pitt that Z was on...he would be the hottest name available for trade, and I could see why the LA Times would jones for the guy. But since Z is on the Cubs, I can't see how they think the Cubs are going to trade him?

Yeah! Whenever we stumble upon the the game's best players, we keep them mired in mediocrity, dammit! We're no quitters!

One important angle to consider: does Carlos want to be here after 2007?

The negotiation will be tough and tense, but my strong sense is that there will be enough money available in the budget to make him happy, and an agreeable amount of years (5 is my guess) to get it done.

Well, I asked these questions last week, and Paul Sullivan has answers today (link requires registration):

http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-060709zambrano,1,3490951.story?coll=cs-cubs-headlines

Key takeaways:

(1) Sullivan's opinion: "Zambrano becomes a free agent after '07 and stands to cash in big with a four- or five-year deal worth $13 million to $15 million per season."

(2) Z's thinking: "I'd like to get that done before spring training or in spring training," Zambrano said Sunday. "If not, this is a business. I still have one more year with the Cubs. Hopefully it ends up in a good situation. I don't want to leave Chicago."
