After the 2004 season, chemistry was the mantra. We got rid of all the bad clubhouse guys and Hendry said if everyone could all just get along we would win.

That didn't work.

After the 2005 season, Hendry mischaracterized the White Sox success and wanted "guys who could catch the ball." He wanted speed and defense, and well...we see where that got us.

So, what will it be for 2007?

Personally, I'm rooting for the Rockies to win it all so Hendry will then decide he needs to get players who love Jesus!

Go Rockies! Go Jesus!

Since hoping Hendry decides to go after high OBP guys is just a waste of my life, I'm hoping Hendry just goes after guys who SLG like crazy. If we only get on base 30% of the time, but the vast majority of our hits are doubles and homers - that's better than what we have now.

I'm guessing he'll go after more speed-guys. We all know that injury is the only reason his "catch the ball" philosophy didn't work.

i'm rooting for david eckstein to put down a bunt to win the world series on a suicide squeeze so that next year we field a team entirely of players under five feet tall

In all honesty I dont Hendry knows at this point. In all seriousness I feel that Hendry is still working with the college model in his head. These are the guys we want to sign... these are the guys we signed... what do we have to do to be successful with them? I think it also accounts for the lack of appreciation of stats and a reliance on old fashioned scouting. High School stats dont translate well in my experience for those first two years in college. Add in the level of competition and a stud at a small school may be player of the year and I dont want them anywhere around my team. A nasty hook and high 70's fastball dont a college pitcher make, especially when they expect a full ride for being player of the year and look like a younger right handed version of Glendon Rusch.

I think this is the trap that Hendry has fallen into. He lacks a long range plan of focusing on this is what I want year in and year out and instead is willing to work with what he has and make the best out of it. Flexability for a GM is a good trait, dont get me wrong. I just dont feel that Hendry is flexable in the right way.

Maybe, just maybe, it will be a focus on guys with a decent baseball IQ. To me, the Cubs have not only been sloppy with the fundamentals the past few seasons but they also show no sense of understanding what the game is all about. Forgetting their (many) physical mistakes for a second, they act like they have never learned the mental side of the game at all. Getting thrown out trying to advance to third with two outs, outfielders throwing to the wrong base in crucial situations, infielders not knowing what base to throw to before th ball is in play, hitters not even trying to go to right field to advance the runner from 2nd to 3rd, pitchers getting killed on 0-2 counts with fastballs down the middle, pitchers not covering first base, etc. just makes me think the organization focuses way too much attention on skills/tools and not at all on players who actually understand the nuances of the game. Obviously you have to have the skills to be successful in the majors, but is it too much to ask for an organization that can spot players who have both?? This is probably going on all over MLB, but the old adage that you can forgive physical mistakes but not mental ones certainly comes up again and again watching this team the last few years.

He will continue to get half players. Speed guys who can't hit, good fielders who can't hit, good hitters who can't field, good hitting catchers who are a liability behind the plate, good defensive catchers who are a liability at the plate.

They will look for impatient hitters. They will overemphasize pitchers who strikeout 1 hitter per ip. They will overspend on mediocre free agents. They will offer million dollar contracts on pitchers coming off of surgery.

They will continue to try and catch"lightning in a bottle".They will let it be known who they want to unload and get virtually nothing in return(unless you see a high value in 24 y/o A ball pitchers).

In other words....Business as usual.

I think this organization is slowly but surely focusing on baseball smarts and OPS. You see more of it in the minors, but Hendry has been patching the parent team for three years. Perhaps he can take some more time because of this disastrous season and develop a coherent package for the 2007 version of the Cubs.

Gotta wait for the World Series to find out.

exactly. but you don't do what the winning team actually did to win the world series, but instead what joe morgan/john kruk say they did to win it...which will likely be speed, hustle, chemistry, heart, bunts and guts.

I predict Jimbo will make a trade if the right deal comes along and it improves the ballclub . . . or at least state this vapid intention on every cotton-pickin' interview he gives.

I say he picks up a bunch of high obp guys without paying any attention to the importance of slg or avg.

Nothin' but walks and strikeouts in 07!

naw, that couldn't happen, hendry has seen how far not striking out has gotten us this year, and quite frankly, i think he's encouraged to continue.

who knows, he could try his theories again and get even more slap-happy players who never strike out, put the ball in play ineffectively, and rarely get on base--never connecting it to why they're losing.

This is the correct answer.

Let's hope the A's win it all. :D

I'll point out what abuck said. Hendry will probably pick up the wrong aspect of the A's.
