I've never met Murton. He just looks smaller than guys like Z and Ramirez. It seems like he could get bigger, even eating more as well.

It's weird, I thought Murton was a "smaller" guy too until I had great seats at PNC Park last year right behind the Cubs' dugout. Holy crap, Murton's got some guns! And some treetrunk legs, too. The guy just randomly looks smaller on TV, but in person, he seems pretty built.

Back to the original topic, while I agree with and cheer on what Williamson said, it hurts that this is pretty much killing his trade value. He was a guy I was really hoping to see come back and impress so the Cubs could use him as a decent trading chip, but now other teams are basically going to expect him for free after this tirade.

Nuts.

I have to actually disagree with some of what Williamson said. Yes Murton is getting screwed, but I doubt he is going to be a franchise player. He just doesn't have the power to do so.

now, on this part of your post...that means that Wade Boggs and Tony Gwynn weren't franchise players, right?

Baker benching Murton is all about saving his job, something that any manager would do.

Much as I like Matt Murton, much as I believe he has a lot of potential, Baker is not out of line for not playing him. It's easy for us as fans to say the season is over. People like Baker and Hendry don't have that luxury.

I can't stand this. way too much of it in today's society.

essentially what you are saying is it is understandable to do the selfish thing instead of doing what is best for the good of the whole.

to me, there is no greater reason in the world to blame someone than when they are acting out of purely selfish motivation. it is the least understandable thing someone can do.

Murton will be gone next year...Our outfield sucks...we have no power..Carlos Lee or Miguel Carbrera should be out there...and Williamson was dead on, you gotta be one of Dustys " Boys" like Neifi Perez ,even if you suck your still out there all the time

Come on now, not many people in the big leagues are smaller than Z.

Self preservation is one of our strongest instincts. People that are self sacrificing are the exceptions, not the rule.

Baker probably feels that the best way he can help the team is to still be here next year. Baker also feels that winning now is a good thing. He has to think that way or he will lose whatever legitimacy he still has with the players. More importantly, Baker is going to do his job- put the best players on the field- and take his chances.

Agreed. Z is above all laws of human genetics. Little known fact-he's also immortal, and he killed Bill Brasky with his bare hands.

Nice job Scott! He must have read my sig.

And my comment about Neifi being like the coach's kid, which is quoted in Mizzou's sig...for which I say thanks, BTW.

It's too bad Dusty doesn't manage to win instead. Yeah I know, he wants to win but man....he really does do some bonehead things. Constantly.

Dusty creates an atmosphere that players like. Players are happy and play well and win. His managing has always been week.Teams have won in spite of his managing. His teams expect to win... Until the end of 2004 here...

Williamson and Murton don't sound happy to me. Dusty keeps crappy players happy by over playing them, other than that I see nothing that he adds to a team.

No cause Murton doesn't have the average either. Regardless, they hit more homers than Murton is right now. But Murton does have the potential to hit home runs.

The atmosphere consisted of happy players and winning. What he brought to his teams hasn't been seen since late 2004.

Now Baker's alienating his players in addition to general crappiness as a manager.

So if the "players manager" inspires nothing but hatred from his own players, what do you really have here?

If Hendry doesn't watch it, this thing is going to spiral down to Blackhawks levels. Putrid, disgusting, smelly levels of overall badness that fester for decades.

Something must be done. The 3 headed monster must be destroyed.

Wasn't there a thread a while back that 6 Cubs players hated Dusty? Was it just a rumor or was there confirmation on that?

Definitely, they all need to go.

Wait...has Matt Murton now entered the "Wade Boggs/Tony Gwynn" echelon in just under one full season of major league time?

take a look at tony gwynn's numbers for his first 2 big league stints. not exactly hall of fame type numbers.

i'm not saying murton is going to be tony gwynn, but what i am saying is that shooting down anyone who points out something like that is absolutely ridiculous.

don't be ridiculous. He was merely pointing out two players not known for power that were indeed franchise players, which does back up his point that power isn't the end all be all as a franchise player. He wasn't saying murton is like boggs/gwynn just that he doesn't need power to be a franchise player...

I'm not sure that Boggs or Gwynn would be considered franchise players today. And even if they would be, his numbers would have to be so over the top in AVG/OBP so as to compensate for the lack of power.

I don't care if Murton ever hits 25 homers .If he hits .300 with a .350 obp that would be great.

All these posts about Murton's numbers not being all that impressive or Williamson not pitching well kind of go hand-in-hand with what Williamson was saying. If you're a relief pitcher and not given a chance to get regular innings, it's tough to be on top of your game. If you're a young player and not given a chance to play through your struggles, how are you supposed to bounce back?

I also think the coaching staff needs to take some responsibility for Murton's struggles. Telling a kid with a very good approach at the plate that he needs to be more aggressive probably wasn't the smartest thing to do.
