Why The Cubs should pick up your guy

I'm starting this thread so that people can just advocate for their player-why he should be picked up. I'd like to see everyone who's interested in this idea to NOT shoot down someone else's choice, but instead advocate for a player you believe would help this team. Might be a bit of a change of pace, and, to be honest, I don't really know who the Cubs should pick up and I'd be interested in seeing some possibilities.

EDIT: So as not to confuse the topic of the thread.

I see so many threads that go like this:

Thread starter: "I like Player X. He's a FA at the end of the year and I think he'd fit nicely."

Respondent 1: "He's not very good."

Respondent 2: "He's overpaid."

Respondent 3: "Hendry doesn't know how to construct a team."

Respondent 4: "I hate Dusty Baker."

And so on...

Based on what I've read, there's not a single player available this offseason that the Cubs should pursue.

Aside from Carlos Lee and maybe Barry Zito, who else has elicited this response from everyone?

Oh, uh, Craig Wilson, Bobby Abreu, Johnny Gomes, and Frank Catalanotto.

I've said it a couple of times that I would like to see Jason Schmidt.

The problem is that very few FA each year are worth pursuing as a difference maker. The vast majority are missing pieces and bench guys. The question then becomes are they worth what they will get. In the past the Cubs have passed on Thome, Beltran, and Vlad to name a few. I would have been happy if the Cubs got any of those guys (without the benefit of hindsight). They have signed guys like Maddux, Eyre, Howery, Remmlinger, and Hawkins to name a few. Without the benefit of hindsight I was only happy about Hawkins.

If someone advocates for Carlos Lee and his big dollar contract I would think that that person thinks Lee is a difference maker. Same with Zito.

.

Jason Schmidt, Miguel Tejada, Trot Nixon, Alfonso Soriano, Bobby Abreu.

Look at the first three responses to the "Ramirez for Abreu" thread. I hadn't read it before just now, but its a textbook example of what I wrote originally.

With every player mentioned, there are going to be people who like the idea and don't like the idea. Heck there is someone in the A-rod thread that doesn't want him for A-ram. It's just the nature of life that people are going to disagree about any topic, and that's doubly true for sports discussions.

When you add to that, the fact that people tend to post more when they disagree than when they agree, you end up with threads like you mentioned. Happens on every message board. Not just this one.

For example, try a video game message board, and mention whether you think a new patch feature is a good idea or a bad idea, and watch the fun.

Good god-just trying to start a thread in which people could just see who's out there, and the possibilities associated with each, rather than every thread devolving into senseless bickering. So much for that.

I'll make sure to just post "Adam Dunn Sucks" in my next thread. That'll be productive.

Um...first of all you've gotten a lot of replies with a lot of different suggestions. And secondly, over half of your original post dealt with this impression that so many threads had arguments. So BBB and I addressed that, and I think each of attempted to do so in a manner that was very cordial. I'm not sure it called for the outrage.

- Bellhorn -- a bench guy who can actually get on base

- Nomar -- he can play 3B so we can move ARod back to SS

- Jason Schmidt

- Craig Wilson

I'm not entirely thrilled with the class. I would prefer to see a deal for Abreu over a signing of Lee. Soriano's offense would be nice in this lineup this year, but will he do it next year and beyond?

That's fine, although my suggestion for you is that if you don't agree with the premise of my post or think its part of a larger general problem with message boards, understanding that the thread was designed for a purpose which you may or may not agree with, simply don't post in this thread. That would be the most cordial thing to do.

I fully understand the nature of this, as well as other message boards. Rather than complain within another thread about that, I thought it might be more productive to simply start a separate thread where people could just see what's out there and who people liked. That's all.

Since we're making suggestions, I'll make one too. If you don't want people to comment on something, don't post about it. You posted about the how argumentative threads are for over half of your original post, and now you don't like if someone comments on it? Sorry...that's gonna happen.

So as not to derail the intent of this thread though, lets let it drop.

There. So as not to confuse the topic of the thread, I simply deleted the beginning of the first post. Now no one will feel the need to defend the honor of their naysaying.
