I was looking at the standings earlier and saw that the Braves are 14.5 games out and just a half game away from being in dead last. Looks like this will be the year that their title run will finally come to an end.

How are they so bad this year?

Well, they are paying Mike Hampton $13.5 million to do less than Prior or Wood. They have one quality starter, as they're getting a Maddux like year out of Hudson (that's bad Maddux, not good Braves Maddux). But I have a feeling their record is worse than what it "should" be, considering they are ranked in the middle of the pack in hitting and pitching stats.

I think their run of getting great performances from fill-ins, youngins' and utility guys has ended; Smoltz is hurt and aging; their bullpen is horrible.

I agree - other than putting any blame on Smoltz. He's got a 1.20 WHIP, .255 BAA, 3/1 K/BB. The ERA is bad, but I'm not concerned about that. He's still getting it done this year.

at least they're sucking with a bunch of young players.

Jeff Francoeur may be young, but he's also really bad and almost impossible to fix. (HE HATES WALKING)

And Bobby Cox likes him, so he'll be their Neifi for a while.

They're four games under their expected W-L, with an 11-21 mark in 1-run games. Still, even if all NL East teams were performing in line with their runs scored and allowed marks, they'd be 12 games back of the Mets.

Some people have been upset with our closer situation as of late, but the Braves' bullpen is only 16-33 in SVO this year, their K/BB ratio is an absolutely horrible 1.54, ERA is 5.03, WHIP is 1.62, and their BAA is .271...it's like their bullpen is made up of nothing but Rusch clones.

Pfft. Rusch would be lucky to put up those numbers.

Actually Rusch's numbers in relief are almost identical:

0-1 4.91 ERA 1.50 K/BB 1.51 WHIP .271 BAA

Yeah well, they aren't good. They are middle of the pack in runs for and against, but it's the bottom half of that pack for each, I believe. They've got some issues with both their starting pitchers and their relievers, and no stud hitter.

Isn't Florida still paying Hampton's contract?

I don't know the accuracy, but it seems like the Braves are picking up the bulk.

Good lord. If that isn't the worst contract in the history of pro sports I don't know what is. It makes Adrian Beltre look like a steal

Andy and Jim came up just short in an attempt to match.

Incredibly, Florida might be the second best team in the NL East. (with a ridiculous 14 million dollar pay roll)

Amazing the ineptitude of some franchises. (including our own)

He had ONE good outing in the World Series for the Mets and everyone stumbled around trying to get him in the off-season after that as a free agent.

I couldn't believe it when I found out how much the Rockies agreed to pay him. He promptly did nothing for them, and everyone was shocked. Bah.

Well - I have to admit, I was using Y!'s profile page. In my haste I looked at his career ERA v. Baltimore (4.37), not his ERA (3.73). So that's my bad.

Guess that only further supports my point - Smoltz isn't the Braves problem.

The Rockies didn't do too well that offseason. They signed Hampton to an 8-year. $124M contract and Denny Neagle to a 5-year, $51M contract. Neither pitcher posted a park-adjusted ERA+ greater than 97 during their time in Colorado.
