Bulls sign Adrian Griffin for 3 years. Obviously not expecting much from Griff besides his veteran leadership, but his defense is very top-notch and he is definitely a Skiles-type player. With this year's team, I'm expecting him to get limited minutes, but it's still a good signing by Pax. I still can't believe all the depth that we have on our roster for this coming season.

Dang, I loved Griffin in Dallas and was hoping we'd resign him. Great defensive player and has a nice mid-range jumper. Will be great in the clubhouse. Nice signing for you guys.

He was a very likeable guy when he was with us in 04-05. A great leader and a very good defensive player. Everyone in the locker room liked Griffin and he does give it his all every night. Supposedly the 2nd and 3rd years of the deal are team options, which I'm assuming the Bulls would of course pick up both years barring something unpredictable happening.

I dont get that. Can someone explain to me how that works?

The NBA salary cap is a maze. I'm not sure why the Pacers get a $7.5M traded player exception, but the exception allows them to add up to $7.5M in salaries in a trade even though they are at/over the cap. It cannot be used to sign a free agent.

For the brave: NBA Salary Cap FAQ

Wow, that stuff gets pretty confusing. Larry Bird exception, haha

Its referred to as the "Bird exception" (or sometimes "Bird rights") b/c the rule was created largely in response to the Celtics' desire to resign him for a substantial raise without blowing the Cap. If memory serves, the rule was established circa 1990 (1908 may recall the exact year or at least have a source). The same rule allowed the Bulls to resign MJ for a one year deal worth 35 million back in 97' (IIRC).

Didn't see this mentioned.

J.R. Smith to Denver

The Chicago Bulls announced on July 20 the team has traded guard J.R. Smith to the Denver Nuggets in exchange for Howard Eisley and two 2007 second-round draft picks from the Nuggets.

The two second-round selections are Denver’s regular second-round pick in 2007, as well as the less favorable of Golden State’s 2007 regular second-round selection and Boston’s 2007 regular second-round selection.

At the end is says "The Bulls then requested waivers on Eisley on July 21."

What does that mean?

Yeah, living at school in the fall we don't get Comcast Sportsnet. Therefore, the more national TV appearances the better.

What does that mean?

Eisley's contract wasn't guaranteed. The Bulls traded Smith and waived Eisley to make room for Griffin's salary and open up a roster spot for Adrian.

Right, they wanted the draft picks but had to take the player, so they dumped the player right after acquiring him.

Can someone update what the Bulls roster looks like at this point?

They actually wanted that player because they could dump him after clearing Smith's salary. The two second-round picks will be lucky to make the Bulls roster next year.

Basically they traded JR Smith for Adrian Griffin, but you never know: One of those two second rounders could be used in a future deal.

Hope so. The Bulls have 4 second round picks for next year.

Yeah, I feel your pain on that one. I'm not going to have CSN either when I go to school, so with 1/4 of the games on national TV, plus all of the games that are on WGN, I'm hoping to see at least 41 games this year.

Oh okay. Thanks. I didn't know his contract wasn't guaranteed so I didn't get the term requested waivers. Seems like a pretty solid move to me. I can't wait for the football and basketball seasons!

You could almost fill the court with all those Kalid El-Amins!
