Interesting debate on ESPN 1000: Salisbury is advocating playing Konerko in LF during interleague games in NL parks in order to accomodate Thome at 1B and keeping both bats in the lineup. Piersall essentially said that his 5 year-old grandaughter knows more about baseball than him.

Forgetting who the messengers are for a second, I am curious how you guys would handle this issue. Would you rather have their bats and take chance re their gloves, or maintain the integrity of your defense at the expense of your lineup?

I'll take offense every day. Paulie has the potential to create a lot more runs than he would allow in the OF. Unless he has a really bad day.

I am inclined to agree. That lineup is a lot less potent without Thome and/or Konerko. Plus, their pitching has been poor, and they need all the runs they can get. I'd bench Anderson, play Podsednik in CF and Konerko in LF.

In a three game series I wouldn't think the potential hands of stone defense would matter that much. I'd rather have the bat.

But at the same time, in a three game series how much is Thome going to out produce whomever is in left for the Sox?

I have no idea as I don't really follow the Sox

By doing what Salisbury is advocating, you bump this out of the lineup...

In theory it sounds like a great idea but can Konerko even play the OF? He must be the slowest player in MLB and who even knows what kind of arm he has. It wouldn't hurt to try him out in the OF and test him out before the game to see how effective he would be though.

How "this" has not already been bumped out of the lineup is beyond me. I understand they have enough firepower to make up for his deficiencies, but he has been absolutely horrible.

I was thinking the same thing.

Hilariously there are Sox fans seriously wanting to trade for Pierre calling into the Score on occcasion...

If the Sox go ahead and play with only one of them, whichever one is in there would hit 3 home runs to make up for the lack of the other one, because this is the Sox. :x

Konerko in LF would be fall down hilarious. Worse than Hundley in LF.

Salisbury's an idiot.

The reason Anderson is still in CF is because the White Sox have nobody that's even respectable defensively out there. Their "backup" is Mackowiak who is just hilariously bad out there.(See Michael Barrett's triple)

That would be funny. But Ozzie is a competant manager, and he's not going to risk losing Thome's bat for 2 months so he has it for a few games. (See Furcal-Lee collision for explination)

Ozzie has already said that Thome will play some games at 1B at NL parks.

If you were Hendry you wouldn't have traded for Pierre in the first place.

The Red Sox have the same problem with David Ortiz when they play in NL parks and I'm pretty sure they put Ortiz in the lineup.

Yeah but they dont have to takeout anyone as good as Konerko to put Ortiz in.

I don't like Piersall but I agree with him here. I have followed PK's career since he was a Dodger. He is a butcher anywhere but first base so you either play him or sit him in the NL parks. Not fair to him but then again, it wasn't fair to him not to be on the All Star Ballot in NL parks until this year because of the Big Hurt.

Thome gets the start at first base tonight against the Pirates.

Calling somebody an idiot for suggesting an idea like this just goes to show you how backward and unimaginative baseball people are. Could Konerko be any worse than Manny Ramirez in left? Manny's defense hasn't kept the Red Sox from winning. The BS about defense winning championships is just macho talk from a non-physical sport trying to sound as tough as something like football. Corner OF defense doesn't decide games. Having guys who can pound the ball with their bat matters much more.
