So I read where Paul Sullivan suggests that Zambrano's anger was "seemingly" directed at Baker's decison to lift him for a pinch-hitter. I read the article and nothing Sullivan wrote gave me the impression that he was upset at Baker. When asked, Zambrano said repeatedly he was upset at himself. I wasn't there, but Sullivan could've provided more evidence suggesting that Zambrano was upset with Baker's decision than what he did, which was none. I read nothing that suggested that Zambrano was upset at Baker. I'm no Baker apologist, but, Carlos, you do realize you can throw a complete game shutout sometime, don't you? That would eliminate you from getting pulled. But you can't throw 90 pitches by the fifth inning to do it.

Zambrano is a fierce competitor, I don't really worry about these things. Just don't burn out his arm Dusty.

You know, I was wondering this when Baker pulled Zambrano. Could it be Baker is finally listening to his critics and is finally looking at pitch counts?

After reading the article, it seemed like Sullivan was trying to make it an issue. Z didn't say anything to indicate that he was mad at Dusty. It was the right decision since he was already over 100 pitches and he had just come off his worst inning of the night.

Paul Sullivan's take:

Trib"]Asked later if he was upset with being lifted, Zambrano shot back: "Did you watch the game? Yeah, I was upset."

Zambrano insisted he was upset with himself but refused to go into detail.

"Everything," he said. "I've never failed in my life, and I've been in baseball for five years, and I've never felt like I feel right now. … I don't know what to say right now. I don't want to say something bad."

Asked again what he was so upset about, Zambrano repeated: "Myself."

For what?

"Myself," he replied. "I'm upset with myself. That's it. I have to do better. I'm better than this. That's why I'm upset."

Zambrano would not say whether Baker lifting him was particularly bothersome.

"He's the manager," Zambrano said. "It's his decision when to take me out."

And here's how Kent McDill of the Daily Herald put it:

Daily Herald"]When the inning was over, Zambrano abused a water cooler in the dugout, and apparently he did not cool off much through the subsequent three innings of baseball.

Given a chance to talk about his performance, Zambrano lambasted himself.

“I’ve been in baseball five years, and I never feel like I do right now,’’ Zambrano said. “I was upset with myself. I’m better than this. That is why I’m upset.”

Funny, there's no mention of Zambrano's anger being directed at Dusty...

Perhaps that's because Z only talked about his performance and not about Dusty pulling him (other than to respond to a question by saying it was his decision).

Not a first for Sullivan, though.

But don't forget Kiley (link in my previous post)

May was a month definitely worth pitching a fit over. But with his temperamental actions during and after the Cubs' game Wednesday night, starter Carlos Zambrano left the distinct impression he strongly disagreed with manager Dusty Baker pinch-hitting for him in the sixth inning with Cincinnati ahead just 2-0.

After Wrigley Field cameras caught Zambrano's angry reactions in the dugout after Baker lifted him, then zeroed in on Baker trying to settle him down, it seemed appropriate that the first postgame question to Zambrano was whether he was still upset to come out of a game that ended in a 3-2 Cubs loss.

"Did you watch the game today?'' Zambrano answered testily. "Well, I was upset, yeah.''

Why?

"With myself,'' he said hurriedly. "[With] everything. I have never failed in my life. I have been in baseball five years, and I never feel like I feel now. I don't know what to say now. I don't want to say something bad. I'm upset with myself -- that's it. I got to be better. I'm better than this. That's why I'm upset.''

Did you try to talk Baker into keeping you in the game?

"He's the manager,'' Zambrano said. "It's his decision.''

But what was it that Zambrano was trying not to say? You can probably guess, and so can Baker.

I'm not sure if Carlos saw it, but we didn't score till the 8th in that game. Not much chance of winning games like that.

so what's the issue? Zambrano doesn't like Baker? Who does other than Neifi and Williamson?

Anyone who is competitive hates to leave a game after making a mistake - you want to redeem yourself.

Seemed like he wanted to avoid saying anything else as to not cause trouble. But he did say "Everything" and "I'm gonna say myself". "I'm gonna say myself". Boy, if you can't read inbetween those lines, UR an idiot. not directing that at anybody

Dusty has lost the team. Is he going to run Zambrano out of town now? Maybe the fans can get rid of Prior by calling him a wuss, Baker can run off Zambrano, and we can get rid of all our good players. Then Neifi can save us.

Please don't SAY that! I'd take this team if everybody could leave except Zambrano. Just him, by himself. Get rid of all the crap.

not only is dusty a failure to bring in big free agents, he is also going to drive away the cubs upcoming free agents. give him an extension and a raise!
