Levine on ESPN Radio 1000 in Chicago reporting that deal is done. Texas expects to receive a "major legaue player in return". That's a contradiction in terms depending on who it is, no?

I knowhis avg and OBP are low, but he has nine ding-dongs. We could use the punch.

So that means the Cubs are roughly adding on another $1.8 million to payroll for the rest of the season.

Looks like a decent trade, but I wish it had happened 3 weeks ago. Hairston did nothing memorable in his time here. Maybe Nevin can give us some pop in the lineup until MV-Lee returns.

Reports out of Dallas radio says the Rangers are picking up 3.5 million of his remaining contract.

oh man

that makes this deal even worse for the cubs

hahaha, way to go hendry!

....as in the Rangers are giving the Cubs $3.5 million; picking up that part of Nevin's contract.

ltb wasted his 2,000th post on that.

wasted?

no, i made a legitimate point. you just don't have the comprehension skills to understand it, apparently.

Question, will he be playing today? Dusty generally benches new guys for a day to let him soak it in and get used to the club. .

why not save what we've got left for a potential impact player should we have a slight chance at the wild card around the deadline, or just hang on to it for next year? this is a waste of money.

I just thought of the Womack issue...not that I think Tony is good by any means, but its just like us to make a move to ensure that our currently hottest hitter gets less playing time.

(Again...I'm not saying Womack should be an everyday hitter on any team...just that he's been the best guy on the cubs for the last two days)

He could be 10 for his last 10 and any trade that gets Tony Womack less playing time is still a good one.

can we be sure that this results in less playing time for womack? walker could be the one screwed here.

Nevin will play 1b until Lee is back. Maybe some catcher (if he's still got it) while Barrett is suspended. He can spell Jones in RF against LHs, maybe start in place of Murton once in a while, and even play some 3b. He's a decent bench option and not a bad short-term option.

He's the RH thunder on our bench that we need.

I'm not saying we can. I'm just responding to the sentiment expressed in the post I quoted.

But I do highly doubt that Dusty would put Womack ahead of Walker on the depth chart.

Same^.

This isn't a world beater trade, but...considering other options like Tony Clark, JT Snow, Jeff Conine, Kevin Millar (Millah!!!!), getting Nevin was better then those bums, maybe outside of Clark. And if memory serves me correct, is Nevin a FA after the yr? So...not at all a abd move, just a decent move.

Does this mean Hendry is ending his good clubhouse chemistry team he put together last season? Nevin is a unapologetic jerk and that surely will cause the Cubs to lose more games.

His problems, as far as I know, are always baseball related such as playing time and the placement of the outfield walls at Petco while with SD.

That being said maybe he keep his cool based on the fact he is coming here in the midst of the season. It is pretty hard to complain about the brickwalls of Wrigley and in terms of playing time well like I said hopefully he gets that he has been traded here to fill holes.

I don't mind this deal on the face of it, because, you know, Hairston sucks and Nevin fills an immediate need. My biggest concern is that Nevin steals playing time from Murton.

Actually, my concern is that this pushes Walker to 2B and pushes Womack to LF, to platoon with Murton.

Because Womack is a good player over his career? He has Neifi written all over him. A couple more good games for Womack and Hendry will be hailing how he saved the Cubs this year while he gives him a 2-year, $5 million extension.

Nevin's home/road split this year:

Home 762

Road 665

That road number is almost beastly. Phil's gotta be hoping for southwest winds strong enough to produce small craft advisories on the lake.

This deal is a big "screw you" to Restovich. We didn't really give up anything of value, but it's a pointless move and it unfortunately sends the message that Hendry thinks we should be adding short term pieces to contend.
