My initial thought here is platoon with Womack? Womack + Walker vs righties, Walker + Nevin vs lefties.

Exactly. This is why you don't want this trade. Less playing time for Walker meaning:

1) his trade value goes down

2) if he doesn't get traded, he's more likely to walk in the offseason and we'll get nothing for a second baseman with a .350 obp

That's not what I wrote. I figure Walker will be in the lineup either way.

too bad Neifi wasn't the one we were trading.

Nevin is simply not very good anymore. I don't really care for this move too much, but hopefully it'll work out.

This is a +.

Hairston has been awful this season. The TWack acquisition made his job obsolete. George Grande discussed last nite that the Cubs made some guarantees on playing time when they were going through negotiations. Apparently 6 teams wanted TWack and he chose the Cubs.

Hairston is also a FA at years end. No way the Cubs were going to extend him. And after the way he was acting in the dugout last nite, its high time for him to go.

I don't mind this deal on the face of it, because, you know, Hairston sucks and Nevin fills an immediate need. My biggest concern is that Nevin steals playing time from Murton.

Nevin will likely only play 1B.

Yes he will. But with Nevin at first, where does that leave Walker? We all know that Womack is Dusty's kind of player, so that leaves Walker high and dry.

And once Lee gets back, don't doubt Dusty's temptation to play the veteran over the young ginger.

If Dusty played Womack over Walker then there really is no hope.

With Nevin playing 1B, will we move Walker to 2B, and Tony Womack isnt in the picture?

Todd Walker will be the odd man out, and this trade will actually make the team worse.

Anytime you get a chance to get a 35 year old first baseman that can only hit home runs in the Minute Maid of the AL and give him to a manager that loves useless veterans YOU GOTTA MAKE THAT MOVE. [/Hendry]

Is Nevin playing tonight?

good question. Don't know if they could get him up here, examine him, etc., etc. in time for tonight's game, but you never know

Maybe the cubs staff thinks D-Lee will take a little bit longer to get healthy in the mean time Nevin can fill in at 1b and Walker can slid over to 2b. Glad to see Hairston moved he couldnt hit water if he fell out of a boat.

From the Cubs:

CUBS ACQUIRE NEVIN FROM TEXAS

Wednesday, May 31, 2006

The Chicago Cubs today acquired infielder Phil Nevin and cash considerations from the Texas Rangers in exchange for infielder Jerry Hairston Jr.

Nevin owns a .271 career batting average with 195 home runs and 706 RBI since making his Major League debut with Houston in 1995. The former National League All-Star is a career .298 hitter (364-for-1,220) with 76 home runs against left-handed pitching. In addition, Nevin has batted .333 (17-for-51) with 5 home runs and 19 RBI as a pinch-hitter.

The 35 year old has a .991 career fielding percentage (24 E/2,546 TC) in 306 games at first base, and has also seen action at catcher, third base, left field and right field.

Nevin has hit .216 (38-for-176) with 9 home runs and 31 RBI in 46 games with Texas this season, primarily as the club’s designated hitter. Before landing with Texas in a deadline deal for pitcher Chan Ho Park last July, Nevin had spent seven seasons in San Diego and represented the club in the 2001 All-Star Game in Seattle.

Nevin, who bats right-handed, has appeared in 1,134 Major League games with Houston (1995), Detroit (1995-1997), Anaheim (1998), San Diego (1999-2005) and Texas (2005-2006).

Hairston was one of the players acquired by the Cubs on February 2, 2005, from Baltimore in exchange for Sammy Sosa. The 30 year old batted .251 (116-for-462) in 152 games for Chicago.

Luckily, due to MLB's ridiculous rules, Nevin starts at .000/.000/.000....fresh start, right?

Remember when McGwire DIDN'T lead the majors in HR's because of that?

Good move. Nevin at 1st, Walker at 2nd till Lee gets back, then Nevin can be the corner IF/corner OF backup guy as well as some pop on the bench since the Mabry thing crapped out royally...

Time to take the ? out of the title?

it's ludicrous. That rule should have died with inter-league play.

Reports out of Dallas radio says the Rangers are picking up 3.5 million of his remaining contract. Edited by Elrhino

I just thought of the Womack issue...not that I think Tony is good by any means, but its just like us to make a move to ensure that our currently hottest hitter gets less playing time.

(Again...I'm not saying Womack should be an everyday hitter on any team...just that he's been the best guy on the cubs for the last two days)

i understand this. nevin is making ten million. we're still going to be paying him quite a bit.

edit: we've played 51 games, which leaves 111 left in the season. so, 68.5% of the season remains - that means nevin is still due $6.85 million. deducting the $3.5 million we're getting from texas, that means we're paying him $3.35 million.

not exactly what i call a good deal.

but you guys can continue trying to insult me. it's just funny when you fail miserably.
