Was totally shocked when BT said to look out for DJ on Friday. Needs one hit for 2000. He is only 31 and can coast home to the HoF. That is crazy. Well done. Wonder if he can pass Aaron for 3rd at 3771. Figure 9 more full years at 200 hits would give him near that.

I was looking at the Yanks and they have 8 guys who could make the HoF- that is 1/3rd of their team. ARod, Jeter, Randy Johnson, Gary Sheffield, and Mariano Rivera will all probably make it on the 1st ballot. Mussina (230 wins at 37), Matsui, and Williams (2255 hits at 37) all have work to do.

Wish we could afford a $200+ million payroll.

Jeter has reached 200 hits once since 2000. There's no way he does that every year going forward until he's 42.

Holy take everything Literally, (and 31-32+9 is 40-41, not 42  ).

2005- 202

2004- 188

2003- 156 (hurt)

2002- 191

2001- 191

2000- 201

1999- 219

1998- 203

1997- 190

1996- 183

Of course, 72.8% of those hits are singles.

Just for the sake of comparison, Manny Ramirez, who is 2 years older and has 1971 hits, has hit only 55.4% singles.

This is 2006, 9 full seasons after this one will be 2016. Jeter was born in 1974. If you were including this season as one then it's 41.

Semantical or not, the point remains you're asking Jeter to put up outstanding numbers over a NINE year period of physical decline that he couldn't do in the prime of his career.

Sheffield will NOT be a 1st balloter, if he makes it at all.

Jeter, barring injuries, will get 3200 tops.

I think Jeter ends up with 3500 pretty easy.

That's gonna be tough. That would be 185 or so every year until he's 40. I don't think he'll make it quite that far.

I think Giambi makes it before Sheffield.

Say Jeter stands at 2150 after this season (would give him about 215 hits on the season)

Puts him at 1350 w/ eight seasons shy of turning 40. Puts avg. hits per year til 40 at < 170. If he follows up this season with another couple 200 hit campaigns would put him at < 160. He's had few injuries to think he gets really injured and becomes a great shell of his former self. Should decline as all players do (sans the roid freaks) but I think he'll be good enough to make it.

I don't think either of them will make it if the steroid cloud keeps hovering over them.

And yet...neither SHOULD make it. People may JUMPED on Bonds for his "alledge steroids use", but before 1998, Bonds was the prototype of the 5 tool player, he could do it all. Bonds makes it, even tho the steroids clouds hangs over him because of what he did BEFORE steroids, Giambi/Sheffield will only go as far as the Pete Rose "show" outside of Cooperstown.

Jeter should get to 3000 hits fairly easily. I don't think he has a chance to catch Pete Rose. He could get to 3500 if he stays healthy and wants to play. But that's the requirement for everybody chasing an alltime record so we'll just have to wait and see.

Jeter is very overrated by the casual baseball community and underrated by the sabr community.

I like him.

My too!

Using the Cubs theory of signing players, only 8 more years before we sign him to a multi year deal because he brings the intangible things they like in ball players. Of course, it will also mean that it is 8 years past his prime! And most important, we are getting him at a discounted price.

Jeter got his hit in the 4th tonight, on an infield donk. I wonder if they got the ball out of the stands on the errant throw.

Really surprised at a couple of you on Sheff. 8 time All Star, MVP, lifetime .300/.400, and just 47 HRs short of 500 with 1500+ RBIs (1494 right now). I think that would be no contest.

I think this is a product of the era he played in. Regardless of whether or not you think Sheffield took steroids, the fact remains that this is an offensive era and stats that would guarantee a person to be a first ballot HOFer don't mean as much anymore. I think Sheffield will get in, I just don't think he'll be a first ballot HOFer. When players from this era start becoming eligible for the Hall, it will be interesting to see how the votes go.

It's not the stats, it's the steroid suspicion. Bonds' numbers are too amazing to ignore, but some voters can probably easily look past Sheff's.

One thing that bothers me about Sheff, and may not for the rest of you, or the Hall, is that he's somewhat of a journeyman. The Yanks are, I believe, his 7th professional team, and I dunno...

I just romanticize the day when people actually played for one team most of their career. Thats how most HOF'ers are anyway.

The thing is though that Sheff has never hit more than 43 in a year. Its not like a Sammy, McGwire, Bonds thing where they suddenly shot up (sorry, bad pun) in the number of HRs they hit.

Sheff's career has more mirrored Aarons in the overall consistency of hitting HRs rather than a few great seasons. I dont get where anyone could possibly think that about him.

The only knock i have seen on Sheff is that he can be difficult to deal with on a personal level. But i think a lot of that has to do with the atmosphere he was raised in and a lot of people do not understand or can comprehend that problem.
