i'm not saying i'd trade murton for dubois, but it's funny how murton is so loved around here while everyone kinda hates doobs.

I don't understand all the infatuation with Dubois. What was so great about him? Maybe it's my frustration, but with all of our failures, I'm not sure that our farm system is very good. But I've also lost all my confidence in MacPhail/Hendry, etc,...

who's infatuated w/ him?

he had a pretty remarkable year production/power-wise in 2004 (AAA) and was consistent enough through his minor league career that people thought he could successfully transition to the majors

Thanks, Derwood.

It somewhat blows my mind that some fans still consider Hendry a good GM. If he's a good GM how would you describe Walt Jocketty? Gerry Hunsicker? John Schurholtz? To me, a good GM consistently creates a roster that is a contender. Jim Hendry seems to have regressed or is stubborn or both. I see no improvement in his philosophies -- I see nothing new regarding OBP, and I hate that he seems to love guys who throw 93+ but can't throw for strikes. To put things in perspective, heading into the 2004 season it was predicted by many that the Cubs would be contenting for the NL pennant. A few years ago, the Tigers were losing 119 games. Guess which team seems to have gotten better and which hasn't?

I think he'll keep improving, but he's nowhere close to good overall right now. He's the type of guy you could easily fit into a good lineup, but with a lineup like this you have to platoon him to maximize production.

I remember people screaming so loud it would wake up a deaf person about not allowing Dusty to platoon Murton this year (before it started). And it was WIDESPREAD.

Platooning Murton makes sense only if your other non-platooned outfielder is at all good. Right now that would be Bynum or Hairston. No thanks.

Getting Giles for RF and platooning Murton and Jones would have been fine -- although in that scenario I'd rather not sign Jones at all.

Dubois is basically Restovich with worse defense. Murton is a good all around and younger.

Why is Murton good all-around? He's got a decent eye and acceptable OBP. But he's got no power, no special speed, nor does he have anything special with the glove.

He's been doing pretty well with everything except power since he was brought up. He skipped AAA too. There is a lot of reason to believe he will keep improving.

He got demoted to AAA last season, as memory serves me.

that was because it was a fear that he'd be platooned w/ a todd hollandsworth type guy. if he platoons w/ jacque, and the cubs get a stud for the other spot, i doubt many complain.

i like murton a lot better than cedeno. he's been compared to grace often, and i think that's a good assessment. he won't have quite the batting average of grace, but he'll provide more pop. just like grace he plays a position which is typically filled by power hitters. cubs just need to add another power hitter somewhere else and bat murton 2nd. deal off walker some time soon... cubs have too many 2 hitters already.

Incidents like Saturday's brawl are why we should've kept the Farns. Someone to choke slam A.J. I've got some pretty sick pics of his takedowns in 2003 and 2005. He'd also be the perfect compliment to Urlacher on the Bears defense. :P :D

If opposing pitchers had simply not thrown Dubois any fastballs, he would've never made it out of A ball. That's probably got a lot to do with it.

Not that I don't agree with you, but what does this have to do with the topic at hand?

Yeah, but now I wonder if players like Doobs would have turned out alright if a different team taught him.

The evidence is pretty overwhelming that the Cubs aren't getting anything from their talent, and other teams are.

He's still pretty good. And we got Novoa who has sucked in return

if it were that easy, don't you think that's what they would have done?
