The Nationals have sent Ryan Church down to AA, despite the fact that he has an OPS above .800.

Pierre for Church (and a prospect  )?

They really sent him to Double-A? Or is that a typo?

Great chance to buy low.

Yes. They are really, really dumb. Pierre plus a low prospect should get him, considering how stupid they seem to be. Unfortunantly, this organization will see the low BA and think he sucks.

Jerome Williams for Church, please.

I was thinking something along the same lines.

I saw this earlier today and had to rub my eyes. He got hurt a few eeks ago and his average suffered, they don't play him enough, and then they unceremoniously dump him in AA? I smell personality conflict with Robinson. Plus there is my main man Bowden...

I like Frank Robinson, but he has split-level dog house, and Church has been in the master bedroom for some time. He makes boneheaded plays in the field, and has a Chad Curtis approach to proseletyzing in the clubhouse that has alienated several teammates. That and his rather unfortunate comments about Jews have made the ice he skates on here in DC paper thin. He can probably be obtained in a trade, but he comes with two carry-on pieces of luggage.

Baseball Prospectus projected equivalent OPS for various outfielders:

Church .804

Jones .776

Murton .768

Hairston .736

Pierre .716

I really think that Bowden will overvalue Pierre's "skills" just like Hendry did.

We could dump Pierre, get Church AND a prospect from the Nationals if Hendry would be willing to admit his mistake.

The Nats have Marlon Byrd in CF for goodness sake.

Then use Murton or Church in a deal for a good RF, and let Jones play CF.

I like it.

Or if we can trade pitching for a good RF at the all-star break, I wouldn't be opposed to getting a good RF, a Jones/Murton platoon, and Church in CF.

One of the writers at BP (I forget which one - Sheehan maybe) envisions circumstances in which Philly would trade Abreu for Maddux. That scenario would require Maddux to pitch more like he did in his first few starts than his last few starts, and I do believe that Abreu is at the beginning of his decline, but that would be a no-brainer if it were possible.

Actually, now that I think of it, we don't have to get a new RF in that scenario, since Church is defensively capable of handling it. That way we don't have to avoid the Pat Burrells of the world because of defensive shortcomings.

And since we're obviously dreaming, who would we target? Gomes, Abreu, Burrell, Geoff Jenkins, Carlos Lee, Mench, Kearns?

I'd do a Pierre/Church swap. I guess we'd be back at square one for a leadoff guy again unless you plan on using Church in that role...but I'd do it.

And then I'd go after Wilson in LF and have Wilson/Church/Jones in the OF with Murton facing LH's for Jones and Pie waiting to replace one next year. Oh well. Won't happen.

This easily wins the award for mixed-metaphor post of the decade.

Church didn't really make any offensive comments, though. He just asked "do all Jews go to hell?", to which I'd like to think the answer is "no of course not." The chapel leader who said "yes" is the guy we should be disgusted at. If the guy just said "Jews can go to heaven" Ryan would've said "oh okay thanks" and it would be a non-story, I'd like to think. I'm pretty sure Frank Robinson does have some grudge against him, though, as Church started the season in the minors, I believe in favor of Brandon Watson. Frank Robinson is an idiot, though. I'd take Church if he won't use him.

I could have lived without the whole conversation, but maybe I'm just too sensitive. In any event I agree with your bottom line -- there's room for Ryan Church's bat in the Cubs lineup.

I may just be geting ESPN'd, but I really like the little I've seen of Gomes. He seems like a gritty huslte type guy who just like to play baseball. Doesn't hurt that he can hit it a mile either.
