"I asked Michael what happened and Michael said he (Pierzynski) hit him without the ball, but that's baseball to me," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said during an in-game TV interview.

"I think Michael is frustrated. Everybody is frustrated and everything broke out."

i just got home, but I had like 4 calls when the fight happened.

I'm sure I'll see all of the highlights on the news and stuff tonight, but like baseball7897 said, that is bush league what Baker did. How can you not defend your player in a situation like that? This guy is a total clown and he needs to be fired IMMEDIATELY.

Dusty didn't actually see what was happening. He was day dreaming about the future callup of Tony Womack.

Can't wipe the smile off that guy's face.

"I saw a clean play by A.J. That's how you play the game," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said.

I hate Dusty Baker. I don't care if it was a clean play or not. Barrett got run over by a relatively big guy. He's frustrated with this bunch of losers who don't play with any intensity and after getting nailed by a guy who everyone in baseball says is a jerk, in the heat of the cross-town rivalry, he punches him in the face. I would have hoped the rest of the Cubs would have seen that and had a little fire lit in them. But they don't have it in them.

When I saw Barrett nail him in the jaw I started clapping in my livingroom. He's my new favorite Cub.

"I can't say he was in the wrong," Baker said. "If somebody's coming toward me in a bang-bang play like that, there's a possibility I'm going to see possible aggression. I don't know if A.J. saw it the same way or not. There's usually two sides to the story."

If Dusty loves AJ so much, he should ask to coach 1st next season on the Southside. I can't believe he backs Jones and Neifi but not his catcher.

Quite simply Dusty didn't defend MB because he's not one of his boy's. You know the kind of player that has talent.

If Barrett had the tools of Neifi Perez, Freddie Bynum, or Jose Macias, Baker would be helping him out all over the place.

That's garbage. He's not defending him because what he did was stupid.

He should still be fired, though, along with the rest of his coaches and the front office.

AJP would have killed any of those 3 with a relatiation punch.

I know this isn't related to Dusty's reaction to the Barrett fight, but I didn't feel like starting yet another Dusty thread for some new quotes I thought were worth posting...

But the biggest test comes for the Cubs and manager Dusty Baker, who have lost 15 of their last 18 games.

"That's what I'm best at—challenges," Baker said. "Not only on the baseball field but off the field. That's what I'm very good at and plan on doing."

Yeah...you've proven how good you are at that Dusty.

"[General manager] Jim Hendry has been trying, big time," Baker said of the search for offense since Lee broke his wrist. "But a lot of it starts with starting pitching. Five runs in the second inning puts you behind the eight-ball."

So the offense being bad is ok, because the pitching is bad too?

He said a lot more than Dusty just going "Meh blah asoidjfa alsdka runs Neifi fiojasd speed tools merf."

Or whatever he says when he gets interviewed, that's all I hear.

All I hear from Ozzie is "jkvdjkd fdjkfdksdf [expletive] jfkfg fuckin fdhfsdn piece of [expletive] fghjkfdsf fuckin fhjsdk [expletive]."

So defending yourself, in what it looks like a "dirty play" by a "dirty player" is what you call "stupid?"

Remind me, to never play baseball/softball with you.

Yeah, that's definitely what I'm saying. Wait, no it isn't.

Defending himself from what, exactly? The play was over, and it was clean. It is very, very hard to come off as more of a jerk than AJP, yet that is exactly what Barret has done. There was no dirty play. You are saying because there is some imaginary threat to his "manhood" or some other ridiculous machismo, then what Barret did was justified. That's just backyard punk behavior. I'm not sorry to see AJP get what he's had coming for a while, but in this instance I think Barrett comes off looking more than a little childish.

As I said in another thread, I've definitely hit guys to protect my hitters when warranted. I don't have any problem with players "policing" themselves. But to think that's what Barrett was doing smacks of homerism and hypocrisy. If he had run over AJP the same way, there would be 20 threads about how Barrett is the greatest Cub ever and how everyone should play with his intensity.

Oh yeah, never play baseball with me.
