BBB, Given that the search function doesn't work and soccer has been here only since the middle of February, I think its difficult for him to have researched your thoughts before hand.

Its not hindsight because you were probably the most staunch Nomar advocate I can remember, but don't chastize him because he wasn't here during the time.

There's probably a lot of posters who weren't keen on Nomar returning (me) who are shocked to see his recent play the last couple weeks. If he tears something in the next few weeks, then it'll just be the same old story.

I agree that he should be given some slack for not being here....but maybe he should refrain from claiming hindsight when he wasn't around to know whether it is or it isn't.

I wish I could find it, but I had a Nomar prediction post where I had him in the high 300s with good power numbers. Then there was the thread I started right around the arby deadline wishing they would offer. I miss the poor sap, and I hope he has a monster season. Not to point at all of the nay-sayers, just because I have always been a Nomar fan.

Perhaps he should stop accusing people of saying things in the past if he has no idea what they did say in the past.

He absolutely deserves to have that ridiculous accusation thrown back in his face. This hindsight stuff is a joke considering how much people talked about Hendry's bad moves before during and after they were made.

I agree with the latter, but again, there's probably posters here who have fallen back to the "wish we woulda signed Nomar" camp after his recent hot streak, which would be grounds for hindsight.

I can't believe the discussion has gotten to the point of should we have re-signed Nomar, Burnitz, kept Patterson vs. signing Jones, trading for Pierre and re-signing Perez. The simple answer to me is it should've been no to all of the above. And I said that during all of the offseason.

And I continue to be stunned at the OBP fans and the" fundamentals" crowd who still are clamoring to see Pie in a Cub uniform.

Who did you want?

Keeping Nomar was never a pie in the sky goofy concept. He was willing to come back cheeply and switch positions. It's not in the same category of thinking about keeping Burnitz or Patterson.

I was one of the very few who supported the Tejada/Prior deal that was rumored. But since it didn't happen, I was very supportive of Cedeno and Walker at SS and 2nd. Also, I believe you and I were in agreement in trying to get Giles to play RF. Of course, signing Giles would've prevented Hendry from overspending on Perez, Jones and Rusch.

Nomah rules. I hope he hits 75 HR and 350 RBI this season.

And jumps in the harbor to save someone's life. Wait, he already did that.

Well played. =D>

Hey, I offered to pay for his premium membership for 5 years if he could prove I'm speaking from the rear view mirror. Just because the search function doesn't work doesn't mean you can't scroll back a few pages to the end of '05 and see who, what where, when and why.

Speaking of which:

1) Why was it disabled?

2) Will it ever be enabled again?

It was disabled because the sheer size of the tables necessary for searching the site was completly crippling the performance of the site overall.

Tim has been busy with real life projects, so he doesn't have a time frame to give us on it.

I don't speak computer language, so you'll have to bear with me. And if I'm not 100% accurate, I will hope someone can correct me if I'm wrong. Part of the problem with the site crashing over and over was due in part because the amount of traffic this place was getting.

By disabling the search function, we haven't had nearly the problems with the site crashing. I don't really understand how it all works, but the volume of posts, traffic and added features (like search) seems to create problems for the site.

As to whether or not the search function will ever be enabled again, I don't know. I sure hope so.

Gotcha. Would archiving old posts, say 2 years or older, and getting them off the server help in making the search function, functional again?

I believe they've already started doing that. At least game threads and such.

Some have been archived, and for a while the search function was turned back on for Premium members, but the site problems re-occurred. So it's back to the drawing board.

That sucks. Well thanks for all that you do to keep this place running! We can live without the search for awhile. Plus it makes me totally unaccountable for anything I say.

BBB's original quote in response to people who assume it's hindsight to have wanted Nomar back

First of all, I never accused you directly of hindsight. My hindsight post was in response to goony not you so I don't know why you're all over my case.

Second, with regards to Nomar, I'm sure there were some people who wanted Nomar to return but there were probably more that didn't. I like Nomar and I hope he succeeds. Ever since the Red Sox won the World Series after trading him, I've felt bad for him. My whole point was that if we would have resigned Nomar, and he got injured, there would have been numerous people that would have complained about wasting money on a guy that always gets injured. I didn't say you personally would complain so don't be accusing me of that.

As for Burnitz and Jones, just look at the performance on the field. As I said before, ignore the contracts for a minute. Burnitz is absolutely horrible right now. I would much rather have Jones's production than Burnitz. Consider that Burnitz is 37 and Jones is 31 it means the Jones *could* increase his production a little bit. Unless you hook Burnitz up with Victor Conte, he's done. Jones at least could start to hit better. I'm not saying he will, but he could.

I don't know where this whole rant came from and I'm not really sure why you decided to attack me when I was the second person, not the first, to bring up the hindsight argument. Maybe it was because I defended my argument so well? You tell me, because I see no reason for your rant. Also, I don't care about your relationship with CubfaninCA. Is it supposed to mean something to me that the two of you aren't pals? Because it doesn't.

Anybody that says Burnitz should be banned immediately.

Oh, so your nickname for Goony is "Anybody". Now I understand.

Since your nickname for Goony is "Anybody", ignore everything I said.

I agree on all counts. You put Giles and Tejada on this team and you have a nice lineup. Walker could have lead off if they could get the speed thing out of their little minds.

Thanks again, guys. I appreciate your support. I'll keep after 'em for you.

Good artcile Bruce. I don't know if you've specifically mentioned it in the past, but the Cubs' (mainly Dusty's) reluctance to replace ineffective pitching and coaching staffs rarely gets play in the media. That could be the topic of one of your future exposes.

Hindsight is 20/20. How many people honestly though Nomar would be hitting .337 right now? I guarantee not even close to as many who predicted Nomar to start the season on the DL. It doesn't take much brain power to say Nomar should have been resigned after DLee goes down. But Nomar was going to play first base and we had a first baseman that plays every day.

Would you like a friendly wager? I'll go back and dig up all of my "re-sign Nomar" posts if you'll pay my Premium membership for the next five years for accusing me of hindsight.

Come on. I double dog dare you. If I didn't have any bring back Nomar posts, I'll pay your Premium membership for the next 5 years.

Oh, and if I win, you are never allowed to accuse people of hindsight ever again. I'm feeling real comfortable about this one. But, it was a double dog dare.

Actually, you can ask CubsfaninCA. He and I aren't pals. He'll flat out tell you that I have wanted Nomar back since before the last out was recorded in 2005. I'm sure his memory is powerful enough to remember the long debates we had on this very topic.

As far as Burnitz and Jones. They both suck. Cub fans didn't want a choice between the two. They wanted a REAL RFer. But, if we had to choose between the two, I'll take Burnitz at 1 year over Jones at 3.

Whose Todd Hundley will we have to take off their hands to move Jacque Jones? It was a bad deal, period. You know what makes it okay to have a Jacque Jones in the line up? There is an answer to this question.

When the rest of your line up is a cast of All Stars.

BBB, don't put too much confidence in my memory. :)

Yes, you were calling for Nomar a long while back. When he regularly plays somewhere besides 1b or 3b, you deserve a tip of the hat.

As for the market for Jones, I'll bet there's a market for a lefthanded hitting RF w/ a .800 ops, and who can cover a good amount of ground in the outfield. 2 & $10 million isn't a huge obstacle.

I recall that we were both pretty passionate for our own opinions and we had a view rather heated discussions to show that passion. I had no reason to believe you would forget. :D
