BBB, don't put too much confidence in my memory. :)

Yes, you were calling for Nomar a long while back. When he regularly plays somewhere besides 1b or 3b, you deserve a tip of the hat.

I recall that we were both pretty passionate for our own opinions and we had a view rather heated discussions to show that passion. I had no reason to believe you would forget. :D

true, true. :)

My big problem was his tendency for injury & poor fielding. I can just imagine him blowing a hamstring chasing a flyball in rf or committing 30 errors @ SS.

If the Cubs weren't set @ 1b or 3b, I wouldn't have minded him back. Altho, his D at 3b wasn't that good.

Gotta give Nomar credit for having a great year so far, tho. Iirc he has 5 game winning hits the past 2 weeks. The Cubs could sure use that.

And at the same time, I can respect anyone who didn't want him back because of injury reasons.

I just think the injuries aren't because he's fragile. I think they are unfortunate, but that they can be overcome. He may be the second coming of Ken Griffey. But, we also saw what Ken Griffey did last year. Griffey was hurt at the beginning of this season, so he's a gamble as well, but for the price, I felt Nomar was worth it.

I can't believe the discussion has gotten to the point of should we have re-signed Nomar, Burnitz, kept Patterson vs. signing Jones, trading for Pierre and re-signing Perez. The simple answer to me is it should've been no to all of the above. And I said that during all of the offseason.

And I continue to be stunned at the OBP fans and the" fundamentals" crowd who still are clamoring to see Pie in a Cub uniform.

Who did you want?

Keeping Nomar was never a pie in the sky goofy concept. He was willing to come back cheeply and switch positions. It's not in the same category of thinking about keeping Burnitz or Patterson.

I was one of the very few who supported the Tejada/Prior deal that was rumored. But since it didn't happen, I was very supportive of Cedeno and Walker at SS and 2nd. Also, I believe you and I were in agreement in trying to get Giles to play RF. Of course, signing Giles would've prevented Hendry from overspending on Perez, Jones and Rusch.

I agree on all counts. You put Giles and Tejada on this team and you have a nice lineup. Walker could have lead off if they could get the speed thing out of their little minds.

I don't know why people continue to bring up Giles since all the evidence has shown that he was never leaving San Diego. As for the 2nd bolded sentence, if you put Giles and Tejada on any team and you would have a nice lineup.

The Cubs had the funds and the players to land both. Yeah, maybe Giles was always staying in SD but Hendry could have kicked open a door to get his attention. Nope...it's easier to overpay a non productive player.

All the evidence YOU needed, maybe. I never read a single story where Hendry showed any interest at all in Giles. I also didn't see any Cub offers that would convince me that they were willing to offer what it would take to get him to leave San Diego.

Yet, we saw all the offers made to Furcal. Why is that?

I'm not willing to concede that Giles never wanted to leave San Diego. And I've given plenty of reasons for why he did stay, and not that he necessarily wanted to stay. It's all subjective, from your point of view and mine.

So, we don't really have any evidence at all, do we? Other than the fact he's wearing a Padres uniform. But, that isn't really evidence at all outside of the fact that if he didn't sign the contract with the Padres when he did, he risked not being able to resign with the Padres before May 1st, and not being guaranteed a good deal or an offer from a team he wouldn't mind playing for.

Unfortunately, we'll probably be talking about how nice of a fit Brian Giles would have been in RF for the 2006, 2007 and 2008 Cubs. If you don't like them and feel like commenting everytime you see them, I guess we will never end this debate.

Good thing we won't ever serve on the same jury. We'd be deadlocked forever.

The Yankees put Giles out of the Cubs range because the Cubs organization is infactuated w/ stockpiling $2-9 million free agent.

Just recently..

$2m (Walker), $4 million(Howry, Hawkins, Remlinger, Burntiz & Eyre), $5m(alex gonzalez & jacque jones), $7m(maddux),$9m(alou)..
