Baker still managing the Cubs is a disgrace.

http://www.suntimes.com/output/cubs/cst-spt-chris14.html

It's not a matter of if but of when Dusty Baker will be offered a contract extension that will keep him managing the Cubs beyond what is shaping up to be an awful 2006 season.

General manager Jim Hendry seems poised to make the move as soon as the Cubs stop embarrassing themselves in long stretches. Even Baker knows you aren't going to get a new contract in the middle of an eight-game losing streak, like the one the Cubs just came off.

Get used to it....

As soon as the Cubs have a decent good luck streak, of say, maybe 5 games....the Cubs will extend Baker for anoter 1 to 2 yrs. :evil. It is inevitable that Baker will be extended.  :x

Don’t forget that the Cubs are first a business. The Cubs franchise value was 287 million in 2002 (according to Forbes). It’s 448 million this year and can be as high as $500 million at the end of this year, moving from the 8th most valuable franchise to the 5th this year, and closing in on the Dodgers for 4th. That’s very impressive given the top 3 are in New York or Boston. 4 years of record attendance. Not to mention the growing of revenues and delivering profits to the Trib. So from a pure business perspective, the Hendry/Baker pairing has been productive. The Tribune board isn’t going to force a change, but in only extending Hendry for two years they did express doubt about longevity of the money rolling in.

Unless the next few months are like the last few weeks, it’s almost guaranteed that Dusty will be offered a 2 year extension. The only thing that will likely prevent it is if he wants more then 2 years, and feels the opportunity is out there.

I thought all this re-signing Dusty was just crazy talk from the frustrated fans, but to read it in the paper?

I cannot believe that they would even think about re-signing him when the team looks this bad on a daily basis. And have since 2004.

I just cannot believe it. It is beyond belief.

It really is a slap in the face to all of the fans who deserve better.

Overpaying for mediocrity since 2004. Like the signature says. Why must we spend 3 million a year for a manager to lead us to 70 wins?

good to see Len and Bob making excuses for Dusty and Co. Too bad they can't be honest and just call out the team and coaches instead of blaming this run on being tired, and running into SD at the wrong time.

Good indication that hiring Brenly would be a mistake.

This has been as bad a run as I have ever seen from them, and that is saying something. Fire Dusty, please.

I wanted to kick my TV watching his post game interview....spineless bastage

what was said

Normal squabble about hitting the ball hard at people, bad breaks, hoping day off helps, etc. But he was hanging his head and stuttering like a kid that got caught stealing a cookie or something.

I am suprised Len and Bob are blaming everything and everyone but the Cubs players and managers for this slide. They leave out the fact that Dusty's batting order is horrible and that the team is playing very poor fundamental baseball. At some point they have to stop spouting the company line and give some objective analysis.

Everyone at home can see how bad the Cubs are and it is insulting to hear them blame it on "good fortune" or bad luck.

After what happened to Stone I can't say I blame them.

Baker's plans for the off-day? To go fishing for some "good eating perch" with hitting coach Gene Clines and clubhouse attendants Tom Hellmann and Gary Stark.

"So Gene, dude. Sometimes your the fisherman and somtimes your the fish. Somebody has to pay for this, but with 3 rooks in the rotation we can't fire the pitching coach. So we hired Jose Macias as hitting coach. Good luck to you"

Then Tom and Gary throw Gene off the boat.
