I'm not the biggest Baker fan, but c'mon! We can't score runs because our guys can't get a hit when it counts.

Yeah that's probably the reason, rather than the 4th worst team OBP in the major leagues.

I see Dusty fault because we can't get on base. When does the fault land on the players?

Some lies on the players, a lot on Hendry, some on the hitting coach, a little on Baker. Every one of those things I mentioned above - they all suck.

NOW WE AGREE!

Face guys no matter what Dusty does will be wrong. This offense is terrible.

No, sac bunting is wrong. Batting Neifi in the 2 hole is wrong. Letting Murton swing away is not wrong. It might not always work, because that's baseball. And a sac bunt might occasionally work, because that's baseball. But the odds are against you and it's absolutely foolish to keep sac bunting the way Dusty does.

Saccing is STUPID.

Yeah but no matter what you need to get a hit. Either from Cedeno or ARAm.

Dude, it's been mathetmatically proven that saccing lowers your chance of scoring runs.

Actually, that's not completely true. While it is correct that sac bunts lower run expectancy in nearly all situations, there are a few situations where it's advisable and increases the odds you will score a run. That's why there's a positive correlation between sacrifices and run scoring. (Albeit a very, very small one.) Most managers know when sacrificing is a good idea and only employ the strategy when it's called for. Unfortunately for the Cubs, however, Dusty doesn't appear to be one of those managers.

I think walks are overrated unless you can run. If you get a walk and put the pitcher in a stretch, that helps. But the guy who walks and can’t run, most of the time they’re clogging up the bases for somebody who can run.

Quite possibly the dumbest thing ever said by a major league manager.

just curious. what is the percentage breakdown? how much of a better chance of a run is there, if you don't bunt?

I just realized that every Cubs walk, Walgreens donates $100 to Ron Santo's Walk for the Cure of JDRS. If the Cubs aren't going to walk to try and win games, at least walk for JDRS!

Dude it was a joke, but the point being there is no right answer for this offense. We have to lead the league in Sac. bunts and double plays so what is right and what is wrong. If you have a bad offensive team no matter what you do at the end of the day it's still a bad team...

a rare fun fact by jjgman21

despite being second from last in the league in OBP, only one one thousandths of a point ahead of Pitt, the Cubs have managed to ground into more double plays than any other team in the NL besides San Fran.

edit...that wasn't so fun, now was it.

If they really want a cure, they should sponsor another team.

Santo just read an email I sent on behalf of NSBB. They are supposed to follow up on it after the break.

What'd it say?

But sac bunting is not right. Not sac bunting is the right answer. Not foolishly reducing your chances is the right answer. Not giving up outs is the right answer. The right answer is to not repeatedly make the same mistakes.
