How long has he been with this organization? The SCORE was commentating on how few Cub everyday players have panned out. Let's see:

Dunston

Grace

Carter

They said that Cedeno looks good but the Cubs have aterrible track record in the area. Much of the blame should go to Jim Hendry. I think the organization as a whole has a bad hitting philosophy.

Just because Shawon Dunston played a lot I wouldn't say he panned out.

.269/.296/.416 for his career. Yikes.

In Dunston's defense, the Shawn-O-Meter is in the Smithsonian.

I can't imagine Neifi having anything put in America's attic like that, unless you want to include his latest contract as an example of the stupidest act in American baseball history.

Oh yes he was the fourth. They couldn't think of any others since 1983.

I don't like Hendry and would have fired him in 2005 if I was making the choice, but I'm beginning to think the scouting department is a HUGE part of the problem. Those scouts could have been there for 10, 20 or even 30 years for all we know. That would explain a lot.

I could be wrong, and I'm sure someone will have this info better than I, but wasn't Hendry majorly involved in scouting and the farm system prior to becoming GM?

How long has he been with this organization?

Hendry originally joined the club as the director of player development in 1994 and was named the scouting director the following year. In 2001, he was promoted to vice president of player personnel.

This team is entirely of Jim Hendry's making. There is no more "cleaning up others' mess" excuse. He's been a huge part of this organization for over a decade, and in charge for 4 years. Before that he played a crucial role in nearly all personel decisions.

True.

Also I googled Jim Hendry tenure. Fifth listing down gave me [url=http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20060408&content_id=1390030&vkey=pr_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc

Interesting that Hendry likes 'toolsy' players yet his organization doesn't do a good job of developing raw talent at the lower levels. It's not a good combination. If you want to be the guys who develop raw physical skills, then that's great, but you better have the infrastructure to turn them into good ballplayers. We don't have that, at least not for position players.

That might explain alot too. Wrong philosophy for the infrastructure we have in place.

Of course, the alternate explanation would be that we just stink at developing players period. Right now, I'm inclined to agree with that assessment. The track record is poor.

Too depressed to go on...

Too early to label Harvey a bust! Montanez has an outside chance of being a decent player yet as well. (But I get and agree with your more general point.)

Monty unfortunately qualifies as a bust because he flopped at SS and was not worth the money or the high draft pick it cost to get him. Then again, the first round of the 2000 Draft was absolutely putrid. Utley's the only one on that list who's a lock to be an All Star...the rest is up for grabs.

Montanez could still end up as a decent corner OF if he ever adds some power to his stroke. He has a reasonable enough K/BB and IsoD to make it to the majors.

As for Harvey, well, just hope that he gets a visit from the OBP Fairy at some point. He's not making good contact and drawing little in the way of walks.

Montanez is 24 repeating AA. He's got a career line of .272/.342/.403 and that is only because of the numbers he put up in short season ball at 22 and low A ball at 23. He was a top 3 draft pick and at best, might one day be a 4th OF. He is the very definition of bust.

Harvey is not yet a complete bust, but he is a huge disappointment, so far. In his 4th pro year he has yet to do anything to raise an eyebrow. He's off to another awful start. Again, as a top pick, he's pretty close to bust material. He's not even worth anything in trade right now, let alone a potential call-up.

The later rounds got better: Grady Sizemore, Dontrelle Willis, Brandon Webb, Edwin Encarnacion, Garrett Atkins, Cliff Lee...
