How long until he's called up into AA? He went 2/5 with a HR and came into the day .340/.413/.632. He was solid last year in Daytona as well. It's not like either the AA catchers are setting the world on fire either.

Are they keeping him back for his defense? I know that's been a criticism, but I was liked what limited action I saw from him in ST and he could continue to improve in AA while hitting at a higher level.

With Barrett, and him being sort of a Barrett type of player, there's no rush to get him to the big leagues, but he's well deserving of a promotion. He'll be 24 in July, so he should be getting to AA soon. Is it just a matter of time?

The guy is on fire...no doubt about it. Maybe they'll let him get a couple months of good ball under his belt before sending him up...but it will be done before the ASB, I am fairly confident in that.

I hope these numbers are a sign of the light sort of coming on for this guy rather than just being inflated due to repeating this league. However, he did well in ST, so I think it's more of a breakout season for Mr. Fox. He's got to advance fairly soon, b/c 24 at A ball doesn't catch anyone's attention, regardless of numbers.

He's been one of my favorites since he was drafted. I got his autograph when he played for Lansing (while he was in Peoria against the Chiefs). Seemed pretty nice, he seemed surprised I knew his name...I mean come on, visiting team single A players aren't always picked out easily lol.

I wouldn't be all too concerned about this particular point. Catchers tend to be brought along much, much more slowly than any other position in the minors. He's 23 now (24 in July) and I believe the average age in High A is 22.5 years old.

I'd love to see the guy in AA in the near future, though.

Oh i know it's definitely not the kiss of death if someone happens to be 24 and in single A...he could just as easily go up to AA to finish the season...and start next season at AAA, putting him right on track and it would never be brought up again. However, being 24, putting up those types of numbers, all while repeating the league...those aspects combined concern me. If he's putting up great numbers, he's been here before, and he's not terribly young, why not move him up? There's obviously something they are working on with Fox...or maybe they're giving Richie a chance to prove himself in AA??

I still think he'll be in AA by mid June if he continues this hitting...

It would help if they were ever accurately listed in the program. The single A rosters are in such flux that half the team on the field aren't in the media guide.

I don't need no stinkin media guide :P

I called him and Dope over by name...you could tell dope wasn't expecting that. It was pretty cool, both seemed like good guys.

To answer the question why Fox hasn't been called up to Double-A yet is a simple one. There is a log jam of catchers in the Cubs organization. Geovany Soto is in Triple-A as the starting catcher, Jose Reyes (who is on the Cubs 40-man roster) is the Double-A starter.

If Fox were to flip-flop with Jaxx C Tony Richie, all Fox would be in Double-A is a backup to Reyes. By leaving him in Daytona, Fox is playing everyday, which is exactly what the Cubs want.

I expected Reyes to be in Triple-A to start the year, but with no movement from the parent club as far as Soto getting a big league job, it became obvious that Reyes would be starting in West Tenn.

A better question might be, why is Henry Blanco on the roster, and getting paid $1.5 million? He plays once a week and absolutely sucks when he does. You're telling me you can't find a good defensive catcher who can't hit worth a lick for the minimum?

Yes, his name is Geovany Soto.

Blanco is regared as one of the top defenders in the game and was also brought to work with Zambrano and be Madduxs personal catcher.

So? He sucks. He's not Maddux's personal catcher. The pitching coach is much more important in the development of a pitcher than a journeyman catcher is. It doesn't make much sense to waste the millions the Cubs waste on scrub players when they can find much cheaper versions of the same thing, and use the savings on better impact players.

Maybe if he was doing this at AA...which he should be 8)

Oh well. We could use some pitching too....

Whatever happened to Mark Reed? If I remember correctly, he was highly regarded after we drafted and after his debut? What are his numbers on the season?

in fact, he should be playing tonight vs West MI...he's been hitting consistently well, and I've been impressed with him behind the plate too. It's tough, because the catcher he's been alternating with, Jake Muyco, is playing similarly well (I would say both are better than either Alan Rick or Oscar Bernard that were here last year).

Speaking of Alan, anyone know what they're feeding him down in FL? He's got 3 HR in the last 2 games  Last year here in Peoria, he was great defensively, but wasn't hitting for anything. Hopefully he's breaking out of that and can get something going.

Damian Miller is a journeyman catcher but he seems to do a nice job whereever he goes working with pitching staffs. I also think your wrong on a pitching coach being more important than a catcher. If a catcher is calling the game behind the plate and getting a first hand look at a young pitchers stuff having the right catcher behind the plate can go a long way. When your budget is 100 million dollars 1.5 for a backup catcher is a drop in the bucket. Having impact players like Wood and Prior on the DL is what hurts this team along with giving millions to a platoon player like Jones.

.364/.453/.418/.871 in just over 60 PA's at Peoria

Not to mention he apparently is quite good defensively. Opposing teams praised his quick arm and good instincts behind the dish last season down in Boise.

I find this rather intriguing considering the fact that Reed's ability to stick behind home plate was the big question when he was drafted, whereas most people expected his bat to come around. His power is still a bit lacking, but he makes good contact, has nice patience, and can even steal a few bases (5 so far on the season).

I've been pleased with Reed's performance so far. I'm glad to hear that his defense was praised last season at Boise, too. He was my pick to break out this season. So far, so good, but we've got a long way to go. Last year, or maybe it was two years ago, my pick was Luis Montanez. Perhaps I was a little early on that one...
