I agree too, however I worry about who would replace them. "Baseball men" like Morgan are the vast, vast, majority of candidates out there. It would be great if they could steal Cashman away from the Yankees.

At least we can take some solace in the fact that it appears the McCormics and others who control the Tribune Co. are willing to spend money. I wish they would spend it more wisely.

Just out of curiosity, why do you think he is a great G.M.?

Every good move the Yankees have made have been as a result of Cashman, every crappy move it's the result of the Tampa brain trust.

He may be denied an extension but Dusty will NOT get fired.

As I said earlier, I agree. I also think JH realizes his mistake at this point, but for whatever reason (probably some sort of p.r. concoction) won't pull the trigger during the season. Part of me thinks there is a breach between JH and Dusty, and JH isn't going to let him out of his contract; rather make him own up and suffer with the rest of us.

Hendry is giving his "public support" of Baker. That's usually the first clue that the manager is on his way out. Unfortunately, I sincerely believe that Hendry is being honest when he says this:

“Dusty’s been through this before,” Hendry said. “I’ve got a lot of confidence that he’s always had a relationship with the players that they’ll go out and give him (their) best effort. I’m very hopeful that just the last week is something that’s not going to be the norm and we’ll pull out of it.”

Playing for Baker is like going to a Club Med....only they should call it Cub Med. Everyone gets to play no matter how bad they are and if they can screw up as many times as they want.

If this team continues to struggle and Baker doesn't have his extension by the end of the month I wouldn't be surprised to see Dusty grease the skids for his own exit. In other words, he'll dare Hendry to fire him.

The sad thing I agree 100% with you. How egomaniacal must you be to drag not only a team of 25 ballplayers who want to win, but a legion of fans into the proverbial gutter just so you can leave town on your terms?

But the question is, who replaces Dusty on an interim basis? During yesterday's pre-game, Santo was discussing the future with Chris Speier. Speier has managerial aspirations. Might not be the worst choice in the world.

But if Dusty dares Hendry to fire him I think Hendry will do just that. So, in a way, it'd be a win for the Cubs.

I'm guessing Lou Piniella's name will come up when Baker gets canned.

I think Speier would be a good choice as the interim manager.

Me too. And I think JH's "vote of confidence" (above) had enough holes in it to be lucidly refered to as swiss cheese.

If Baker goes I think the whole staff goes.

But I agree on Speier.

Speier is currently the loneliest guy in baseball.

He might be lonely, but he's sure working his butt off giving those sac bunt signs all the time.

I'd be really surprised (but pleased) if dusty gets canned. With all the love Hendry has showed for Baker publically, I think he would give Dusty the option to "retire" just so Dusty can save face.

I don't get it :(

At first I thought he meant that since Speier is considered somewhat of an outsider in the Cubs coaching ranks, and a potential candidate for the interim job if Baker is canned, that he's lonely with no friends in the current regime. But then I figured it had to do with his job, 3rd base coach, the guy who stands closest to any Cubs baserunners that actually reach 3rd base.

He's lonely because the Cubs batters don't make it to third base. When it's said that a third base coach is lonely, that refers to an inept offense with a lack of base runners.

Actually, I think Gooney hit it right on----unlike Cubs hitters---on both scenerios. Speier is not a "Baker guy", in fact Speier REPLACED a Baker guy in "Wavin' Wendall." So, it might actually be a GOOD thing that Speier is an "outsider" in terms of the rest of the coaching staff. Beisdes, would you want to be assoicated with the manager with the surfer attitude, and California dreams.

If Baker was fired they might go with Rothschild as an interim.

I don't know. I think the writing may be on the wall for Rothchild too. After three consecutive years of injuries to the two most important pitchers on the staff, and the non-development of minor league pitching in the majors, I think Larry's fate is tied to Dusty's.

I think, as others do, that Speier may be the direction the club goes in an interim basis. Although for Speier's sake, i hope not. I don't want him to fall to the same fate as Bruce Kimm.

If Baker gets fired Rothschild should too.

And Clines and Matthews should be arrested for impersonating major league coaches.
