I don't know how many of you are collectors, there is an Alex Gordon rookie card that wasn't supposed to be released in the 2006 topps walmart sets.

I own 10 such sealed boxes. They were 10 bucks each. The odds of me having a Gordon are slim, but I'd make $1,000 or more if I had one. The alternative is to sell them on ebay and end up making about a sure 80-120 dollars in profit. I don't have much disposable income, so I am leaning toward selling the boxes on ebay.

I'd open the boxes and see what happens. You may not have the card, but you could pull another insert to make some cash. Then again, if you're needing the cash right now, you're better off selling the boxes than running the risk of having nothing.

Uh, chance to make 1k or settle for 80-120, 80 bucks is nothing, open em up and try to make 1k, then spin that into another investment and so on, and so on... then you will not have much of a problem with disposable income.

$10 a box? How many packs are in a box? Isn't it like $2-$3 just for 1 pack now, and if I remember right wasn't it like 24 packs per box? Of course I haven't bought baseball cards since about 1994 so I probably have no idea what I'm talking about. :)

If you auction the UNOPENED boxes you should do far better. People will spend far more for unopened boxes that may have the card. Go to a llocal card show and see what you can get. I wouldn't open them, let someone else pay you to take the chance for the card. You'll make far more than 80-100 bucks. But do it soon, while the publicity on the card is hot.

Yeah, whatever you decide to do I would do it quick because like oldcubsfan said, do it while there is a lot of publicity.

I would use oldcubsfan's strategy for one box. If you can make a lot of money selling the packs then do that, but if there isn't much demand then just open them yourself.

You'd be stupid not to sell them. I hear there are less then 100 of those cards out there, and the ones that the card is in were likely shipped in February.

But just for the dark humor, make sure you have the winner of each auction email you when they open the boxes to see if they contained the card.

Yeah, I opened 3 boxes and counted how many rookies I had. It was like 6. I figured if the odds of getting a rookie at all were that little, it must be too much for a Gordon, so I'll sell the other seven and end up with a decent profit. I got a couple Rich Hill and Anthony Reyes rookies, not worth anything, but nice to have. Also got 5 Mantle inserts worth 10-15 each.

isn't opening the packs the only fun part of collecting baseball cards?

That was always my philosophy. Haven't been into cards for 15 years but I used to buy them by the case and ravenously open every pack. I do have a fair amount of special autographed cards. Not that they are worth that much but it's cool. I'm a pack rat of sports collectibles. I do have 2 Jerry Rice rookie cards in mint/near mint. :)

I've got a Bagwell rookie card and many valuable hockey and basketball cards and rookies.

Kewl. I've got a 1970 Ernie Banks card that I got 10 years ago when my cousin offered it in exchange for a Bo Jackson rookie card LOL! Works for me. 8)

My most valuable cards I reckon are my 2 Jerry Rice rookie cards in near mint condition.
