Eyre: 0.84 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, .188 BAA

Howry: 1.74 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, .231 BAA

Giles: .270/.415/.378

I'll take Eyre and Howry, even knowing that KoJock was Giles' alternative.

Difference between Howry/Eyre and Wuertz/Novoa/Aardsma << Difference between Giles and Freedom Jones

How are three young pitchers trying to stick in the big leagues even remotely close to Howry and Eyre, arguably the best righty and lefty setup men in the game last year?

A solid, veteran bullpen can overcome one mediocre everyday player. I realize that our offense is weak, but good pitching IMO will be more consistent and more valuable over time. Our pitching can keep us in it, our offense still has plenty of time to come around. I'd rather lose a game 2-1 because of our weak offense than lose a game 10-9 because of a powerful offense but no pitching.

Remlinger and Hawkins were arguably the best bullpen arms when we signed them. Bullpen arms are very unpredictable, and thus very risky signings. Brian giles is very predictable, and not much of a risky signing. Jacque Jones is also predictable, and the difference in Giles' production and Jones' is easier to predict, and also more important to the success of this team.

How is an old player anymore predictable than a bullpen arm.

Howry/Eyre, for sure.

These two guys are a huge reason why we haven't lost a game that we've led after the 6th inning*

How about a poll of:

Brian Giles or

Neifi Perez, Glendon Rusch, Jacque Jones?

Perez, Rusch, and JJ, hands down. Way more versatile, and all three of them flat out know how to win.

A vote for Giles, as Howry and Eyre have been our 4th and 5th most effective relievers to date. (Behind Williamson, Dempster, and Novoa, in that order. You'll also note that all those guys were already on the team when we went after the high-priced FA relievers.) Eyre hasn't given up many runs yet, but if his BB/9 stays above 6.00 that will probably change in a hurry. (Just ask Carlos what a walk rate like that will do to your ERA.)

Really hard to convey sarcasm with the written word, isn't it?

At another board go to sarcasm is usually written using green.

I think thats a great idea.

I didn't vote, because I had every reason to believe the Cubs could have had Eyre, Howry and Giles.

Therefore, it's not an either/or.

Bring back Nomar, sign Giles, sign Lofton, sign Eyre, sign Howry, and sign Miller. Don't trade Patterson and don't trade for Pierre. Lofton, Patterson and Hairston hold down CF until Pie is ready. Lofton could also split time in LF with Murton against tough righties. Nomar also figures into the mix in LF, SS and 3b, and now he could be manning 1b.

It could have happened.
