I hope Jones knows there are some REAL cubs fans that don't ever get to go to games, hardly at all. That pull for him to battle through slumps.

I'm going to criticize Jones when he's not playing well but I'm not going to criticize him any more or less than I would any other Cubs player. I'm going to give him his due when he gets a clutch hit or makes a good play and I will continue to hope for his success as a Cub. I understand why he feels this way and I think Cubs fans should do the same. If you are going to boo Jacque then you had better boo Aramis just as much because he is hitting just as bad, if not worse, than Jacque currently is.

The treatment being dished out is certainly not why i fell in love with the cubs. Wrigley has never been 'little philly' and whilst i hate the tag of the loveable losers i hate the fans that are crapping on the memories of generations of players and genuine cub fans. I'm not talking about booing as you pay your money you voice your opinion i'm talking about 'all kinds of stuff' as Jones calls it. BTW i am no Jones lover , i didn't like the move and hated the contract however i don't believe in abuse as being the way to voice my dissaproval. Will this nastiness at the park only go when we finally win and the bwgners go away??.

Jock is not too happy with the fans...

Jones then ripped into Cubs fans for a perceived lack of support, pointing out he's not the first Cubs player to get harassed at Wrigley.

"I'm not confused at all," he said. "I've seen friends go through it. Sammy Sosa hit 60 home runs three years in a row, went into a little slump and ... hey, like I said earlier, they have a right to voice whatever opinion they want to voice.

"But it's not going to make me play any better. It's not going to make me play any worse. I'm just going to go play the game the way I know how."

Jones said he was "hearing all kinds of stuff" in the outfield throughout the game before hitting a three-run shot off Josh Johnson to snap a 3-3 tie in the eighth.

"I'm just getting used to it," he said. "Where I came from, they were passionate about baseball. We probably didn't draw as many [in Minnesota], but they were there through thick and thin. [The booing] is something I've got to get used to. I'm blocking it out as much as I can."

This is the second time he's complained after delivering a big home run, maybe the fans are doing something right after all.

Jones is a 240 hitter with no patience or clue on what to do at the plate. I'm glad he is going to continue playing the game the way he knows how too. It got him 15M so I can see why he feels that way. I hope Hendry gets some kind of right handed batter to hit against lefties or it's going to be 0-3 galores.

Remember me?

This is nothing new. Jones is going to have to grow up a little - he's not playing in dullsville anymore.

New RF please. Bring up Pie. Bring up Sing. Bring back Sammy. Anything. Jones sucks.

I just don't get it. The Cubs were frustrated by Corey's inability to be a more selective hitter, so naturally they go out and get a more EXPENSIVE, OLDER version of Corey. I just don't get it. I would prefer Burnitz to Jones.

Jim Hendry = No Offseason Plan.

Again.

That's a ridiculous, baseless accusation. Did his offseason go as planned? Probably not. Did his offseason plan have alot of flexibility in case things didn't go his way? Maybe not. But to say he didn't have a plan is absurd.

Custer had a plan too.

Jacques Jones = Alex Gonzalez. Good speed, defense and occassional important HR balanced against no patience, a bad overall approach to hitting and (eventually) a .245 BA.

Jacque Jones should never bat against a lefty ever again.

That's actually a very good point. A needle in a haystack full of unrealistic suggestions and hindsight. He's expensive, but platooning him with a righthanded RFer would be tolerable, IMO.

An apt comparison. Except that with AGon you can swallow the offensive suck-i-tude a little easier than at a corner OF spot.

Jacque is hitting .209/.271/.442

He's got 12 K's and 3 BB's. Yes, he has 2 big homeruns, but that doesn't change the fact that he's sucked this year, continuing a career of suckitude and bringing it to new depths. Then again, it doesn't excuse ridiculous booing by the fans. But then, yet again, I don't think he should be out whining about how much more supportive Twins fans were, and talking about how nobody is giving him pitches to hit then swinging at the first pitch out of the zone following 4 pitch walks.

Oh, and I don't think it makes a lot of sense to "give Hendry credit" for having a plan. I think he had a plan. I think it was a ridiculously misguided plan, with poor implementation. But he had a plan. That doesn't mean he's a good GM by any stretch though.

I agree that we should not boo Jacque, particularly this early in the year. I understand the frustration though, and I think its proof that Cubs fans aren't just sun-bathers and beer drinkers. They understand what they are seeing.

Still, lay off Jones and give him a chance to do his thing. Just don't xpect him to be Barry Bonds. Be happy if he is a fatser Burnitz.

I don't think anybody expects him to be Barry Bonds. And I don't think anybody should be happy with a faster Burnitz. Burnitz led the Cubs to some of the worst RF production in the league last year. Right now Jones is worse than that. He's dangerously close to Neifi territory (although Neifi has been even worse than he normally is). People should expect more out of Jones, and they should expect a heck of a lot more out of RF. But that's where Hendry's misguided focus hurts the team. It's not Jones's fault he sucks (though it is his fault he keeps swinging at crappy first pitches).

And a RF is rarely going to drop a double play ball and cost you a trip to the World Series.

Of course he didn't get booed by the Twin's fans- there weren't ever enough there to actually be heard.

Custer's plan " Let's split up and see if we can find any Indians."

Hendry's plan "Let's get career years out of one guy and rely on two rookies to produce and our starting rotation to stay healthy."

I agree with your expectations, I'd just give him more than 3.5 weeks before mercilessly booing him. CPatt got 2.5 years before the incessant booing started. I guess it doesnt matter what we say on here though, the expectations at Wrigley are very high these days (which is good) and the vocal minority of the fans are very much like Philly fans (unfortunately).

And there are no RF bleachers at the Metrodome. Just the Blue Monster.

Hey, now--I was just at the Twins-Yankees game a week ago where it was pretty close to a full house. Their average is maybe only 20,000, but this is hardly Montreal in the Expos last days. There's some fans here, they're just too "nice."

Rondell White, the Twins' new DH, did get a few boos even due to his sub-Mendoza average.

I do love Jones' ridiculous posing after his homers. He's not a very likable guy. He usually gets himself out as fast as humanly possible and when he hits a dinger he admires it like it's a Picasso.

Jones is quickly becoming my least favorite Cub.

If he weren't striking out at such high frequencies the fans wouldn't be booing him. What does he think, they boo him becuase he's new?

And Jock, please don't compare yourself to Sammy Sosa. It is an insult to Sammy and the Cubs.

All those numbers mean is that he is due for a hot streak to get back to career norms. The team has been winning despite his struggles, so hopefully they continue winning when he comes around. Same canbe said for Aramis Ramirez.

He hasn't hit his career norms for two years now.

So he must really be due.

No, the same cannot be said. As bad as it is, he's still not that far off from expectations, which were low. Ramirez can be expected to get on a hot streak to get back to norms, because he's far below normal. Jones is just a crappy RF who is playing a little more crappy than normal.

Posted

Jones shouldn't be booed just yet, but at the same time he shouldn't gripe abbout the fans' reaction to his subpar play thus far.

Also, comparing Ramirez's early season slump to Jones' isn't really a good comparison. Ramirez has been a consistent performer nearly every season of his career. Jones has not. What we're seeing from Jones is pretty much what we should have expected-occasional power, some decent defense and a lot of strikeouts. I'm sure he'll have a couple multi hit games to get him around the .250 mark, but he's not going to be better that that.
