I found this quote in one of the articles on the front page.

It was only three full seasons ago that Baker, beginning his first year as Cubs manager, was torn over whether to keep Zambrano or Juan Cruz (now with the Arizona Diamondbacks) in the rotation. Baker turned to Antonio Alfonseca (now with the Texas Rangers) for advice and has been happy he heeded the veteran reliever's suggestion to stick with Zambrano.

Dusty went to Alf for advice?!? Where was Larry?

He was probably in the weight room working out vigorously.

Please tell me this was during that half-season where Cruz was called up and was pitching extremely well.

This is like Lenny Harris telling Hendry to make the Lee trade.

To think that our current situation was all left in Alf's six-fingered hands.

you guys are making it seem like Dusty went to Alf for a talent evaluation. that article says nothing of the sort. in all likelihood, Baker was probably looking for some insight into Z and Cruz's mental toughness, confidence, personality, etc. if that's the case, turning to the only other hispanic pitcher on the staff, and therefore a guy who was probably a bit of a mentor to both (for good or bad), was not a bad idea.

is anyone going to argue with Alf's choice?

That's the first time I have actually ever seen his sixth finger. Thank you for posting that.

I will say this, it's not like it was necessarily a cut and dried issue at that point. Coming up, Cruz was considered every bit the pitching prospect that Zambrano was and both had similar major league numbers coming off 2002, each at the ripe young ages of 21...

GS W-L IP H HR BB SO ERA
Cruz 9 3-11 97.3 84 11 59 81 3.98
Zambrano 16 4-8 108.3 94 9 63 93 3.66

Of course, as it turned it out, Cruz was actually 2 years older than originally thought. But I remember a lot of experts at the time not being sold on Zambrano and thinking that Cruz had Pedro-like ability. So I say, way to go Alf! Maybe they should give him a job in the scouting department.
