Being a history/stats geek this maybe something that only interests me but today is the 25th anniversary of the longest game in professional baseball history.

The Washington Post has an article on it today.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/04/17/AR2006041701586.html

It was between the Rochester Red Wings and the Pawtucket Red Sox.

Here is the final scoreboard :

A couple of notables :

Cal Ripken Jr. was the 20 yr old 3rd baseman for Rochester and went 2 for 13.

Wade Boggs played 3rd for Pawtucket....didn't see his stat line.

Bobby Ojeda was the winner.

One funny/odd note I saw, Rochester catcher Dave Huppert ( don't know him) caught 31 straight innings before being pinch-hit for in the 32nd inning.

In total 25 players in this game played in the majors...obviously with varying degrees of success

Thats a long game.

Do you think the PawSox would have scored in the bottom of the 9th to tie it if they knew they'd have to play another 24 innings? :)

It may have been the longest game ever, but not the longest played in a single sitting. That honor goes to a June 26, 1988 game between the Burlington Indians and the Bluefield Orioles in the Appalacian League, lasting 27 innings and 8 hours, 18 minutes. (The Pawtucket game only lasted 8 hours, 7 minutes before it was suspended.)

how on earth does a manager have another stick on the bench after 31 innings of baseball?

Now pinch hitting, number 87 - Jose Macias.

[note]Dusty was not the manager[/note]

Well i went to today's RedWings game and it wasn't quite as long but it lasted 4 hours and went 12 innings. The Wings won 6-5 on an E3... btw.... Kaz Matsui played for Norfolk.

Boggs, 22 years old when the game started and 23 when it ended, was Pawtucket's third baseman and top hitting prospect.

That's what I like. An interesting question: How many beers did Wade Boggs drink between the games?

Hey Aram Fan, where u from in Rochester? I live up in Greece off of W. Ridge. I've been in the city for about 2 years now. Don't see many Cubby fans out here.

It's a small world.

You make a very interesting point. How does a team still have someone available on the bench after that many innings?

And how bad must that player have been that the manager would wait 31 innings before giving him an opportunity to play? :D

Obviously. After all, if Dusty were the manager, Macias would never have still been available after 31 innings.
