Just heard on WGN radio that the Cubs are calling up Aardsma. Pagan has officially been placed on the DL.

Great move, I just hope Dusty doesnt let him rot out there. Let the kid pitch, dont let him jsut sit for 7-8 days then bring him in. Good luck David!

He'll play right away. Gotta give Howry and Eyre some rest! Good to see Novoa hold his own today. 7-4 so far. A lot better then I thought they'd be at this point the season. I was just hoping and praying for .500! Keep it up guys!

I wouldnt be so sure about that. Dusty likes to ride the hot hand in the bullpen. Just look at Weurtz, he sat out there for long stretches already, and then gets brought in and stinks up the joint. Not saying its all Dustys fault for Weurtz performance, but not pitching regularly is not a good thing with bullpen guys. Dusty did the same thing to Welly last year letting him sit for 12 days or so, then bring him in, and go figure he was wild.

Well no offense to Welly and Weurtz but they are not the model of consistency. I'm sure you would do the same thing if you were the manager. You saw it with Novoa today. He just came up last night and he pitched two innings today.

Weurtz sat because Dusty didn't have a lot of confidence in him. If Wuertz had been effective during ST and in his earlier appearances, he would have seen more action and perhaps been given the benefit of the doubt when he struggled during the season.

Dusty didn't have a lot of confidence as well as all of Cubbie Nation. I have no problem with Weurtz being sent down.

I wasn't high on him going north with the team after his horrible Spring. Dusty gave him the benefit of the doubt.

This sentiment towards Wuertz is downright strange.

I'm not sure what's strange; he was ineffective and as a result, sent down. It's not like he's a guy with a long track record to fall back on. Perhaps if the Cubs rotation was solid they could afford for him to find himself on the 25 man roster but, as it stands, they can ill afford to keep him around.

Where did I bash Dusty? I have no problem with Weurtz getting sent down, as he has struggled since spring. However, when you let guys sit in the BP for days upon days without using them, you cant be surprised when they come in and struggle. Yea he threw Novoa today, but Novoa has already been with the Cubs before. In the past when the Cubs have called up a young reliever that is making his debut, it has taken quite a few games for Dusty to actually bring them in. Believe me I can find plenty of things to bash Dusty about(like batting Freddie freaking Bynum in the 2 hole today) but in this case Im not bashing him. All I said is I hope he doesnt sit out there days upon days without getting used.

Wuertz had one bad outing, that doesn't make him ineffective. People are getting hung up over his meaningless spring numbers and forgetting that he was an effective reliever with peripherals pointing towards him being even better this year.

Dusty is known to ride the hot hand, and let the last guy in the pen rot out in the pen for numerous games. He has done it numerous times with young pitchers coming up for the first time. All I know is Aardsma needs work while he is here, and Dusty needs to get away from using Eyre so much. I understand why Dusty has used him alot, but at this pace his arm is going to fall off by July. We have a very good bullpen right now, however with our starters the way they are right now, we need to use EVERYBODY that is out there or else our pen will be in shambles come July.

Eyre has the fewest outings in the bullpen except for Wuertz, who was sent down.

Agreed, and how long did it take Weurtz to pitch in his first game? And then his 2nd? Bullpen guys need work, when they sit for long periods of time, they lose their control(i.e Weurtz, Welly). All I was saying was let Aardsma pitch if hes going to be here, dont let him sit for days upon days.

Yea but he its because hes having him go 2 innings at a time right now, and throwing alot of pitches each time out. Where is he in innings compared to our other relievers?

He had two iffy outtings. The first was his relief of Marshall in St. Louis. The second was in Pittsburg (0.0 IP, 2 ER). Add that to a horrible spring.

Wuertz has the stuff, but it isn't there right now.

6.2 IP, about the same as Williamson, Dempster, and Howry. His total number of pitches is comparable too.

Like I said, he doesn't have a long track record of success. Guys in his position are subjected to the "what have you done for me lately" treatment. As long as he is unproven, and has options, he will have to pitch well to stay in the MLs. Also, even though he wasn't charged with ER in his first 2 appearances he allowed inherited runners to score. Baker tried to allow him to come into, what should have been, a blow out to regain his confidence and all he did was make the game closer. If he's worthy he'll be back...

Hmm, Ok must just be him going 2 innings twice already that had me thinking he had pitched more. Along with the 38 pitch performance in the 2nd game of the year I believe. My point still remains though, if you are going to call up another BP arm, let him pitch.

That STL outing was fine. Pujols made a great play for a single, and a groundball was in the right spot for Rolen to get an infield single. Then he pitched 2 IP, 2 K's w/ only a walk, no flyballs in either outing. Then he blew up against Pittsburgh. If we sent every reliever down who had a sequence of outings like that, our pen would be a revolving door.

I agree. You have to give him the opportunity to prove himself at the ML level for a little while. Like TT said, Wuertz had one bad outing, one decent outing and a good outing. Give the guy more than three appearances to show what he can do. Like TT said, you can't cite spring training as a excuse. Some guys have horrible springs and do well during the year and other guys have great springs and then stink it up once the regular season starts.

That being said, Dusty and the Cubs better give Aardsma a chance as long as he's up with the team. I would like to see Wuertz pitch well in AAA and get another shot later in the season.
