Barrett seriously is the best NL offensive catcher.

Brian Mcann

How do you figure?

I don't really. Maybe in a year or two if Salty doesn't take his job.

how many runs did Paul knock in today?

Yep but Michael can't catch anyday. Will he always knock in 3?

I'm not watching, so I don't know what your gripe is, but will there be a short hop play at the plate every day?

Barrett is a good hitter, but how many games has he just killed us? Like with the play at Philadelphia when he threw to third when he could have reached out to tag Rollins. I would trade Barrett for a number of catchers straight up.

The best defensive catcher in the league is still going to make bad plays every now and then. I don't think a statistical look at Barrett's defense will show he's that bad.

And with the offense the Cubs have, they can't really afford to start sacrificing offense for defense (again).

if you managed the Reds, wouldn't you just sit Hatteberg, put Dunn at first, and let Freel play left everyday and bat at the top of the order?

it makes no sense to me why that guy doesn't play everyday.

Agreed. Freel is much better than old man Womack.

How many of those can you get for Barrett "straight up"?

None because he isn't in their league. Thanks for helping make my argument.

So Barrett is the sixth best catcher in baseball. Ok, point taken.

You think Barrett is bad behind the plate and you would trade for an overrated guy in Javy Lopez who has clearly been on the downside of his career for the last couple of years and was never a good defensive catcher anyway?

that play in Philly hurt, but it was more of a lucky play by Rollins then a bad play by Barrett. Rollins gambled that he could deke Barrett into throwing the ball down to third. Barrett did exactly what he should have on that play, but Rollins' gamble paid off.

so there's one game that Barrett's defense might have cost us. I tend to think other people were to blame for the bases being loaded at the time, but I guess that's just me.

the third game of the Cards series, Barrett's block of a ball in the dirt and way wide helped keep the Cubs in the game before he won it with his bat. so there, he's even on winning and losing games with his defense.

Javy Lopez? That's reaching. He's not really a catcher anymore.

Neifi popped out and Cedeno hit the first pitch back up the box for a single.

Neifi really battled not to take a walk though.

Yes he did. He fouled a bunch of bad pitches off then hit a bad pitch straight up in the air.

No, he's not in their league. He is in this league. The National League. And if there's one manager who would take any catcher in THIS league over Barrett for this season, they're borderline [expletive].

He saved us from a walk.
