talking in analogies that people dont understand is dumb, even if they turn out to be technically correct

I don't think so. It may mean, however, that the listener isn't as smart or wordly as he or she thinks. Half the people who have responded to this thread understood what he meant.

I can't believe this is being picked apart.

I'm a little shocked you of all posters on NSBB are upset about a sarcastic post directed your way.

There are plenty of people that do understand it. Dusty's an old folksy type of guy. It doesn't surprise me that he uses fishing references. He also likes to talk about hunting and going to his cabin.

Not that I found his fishing comment dumb, but I would have no problem at all if he was limited to those three subjects.

If I read it correctly, he was making a sarcastic comment re subject matters that you might better understand. While I don't agree with the method, I do agree with the message.

What's funny about it to me is it sounded like Dusty was doing a parody of himself. Whenever people imitate Dusty here, you can bet they'll use some obscure/semi-obsucre fishing reference. Then, lo and behold, Dusty proves the cliché right.

Do I think it's dumb? Not really, though there have been times when his message was really lost due to Dustiness. I just think it's bizarre. other coaches would just say, "now that he's got the monkey off his back, blah blah blah." Dusty was more original (and, IMO, more strange and goofy.) It was one of those, "There's Dusty being crazy old Dusty" moments.

The reason its dumb is because it adds no clarity to the subject matter. You use an analogy when describing something obscure or abstract to put the discussion in terms the listener will understand. In this case, nearly everyone listening understands baseball while only some know this fishing reference. Therefore its a useless analogy.

Come on guys. I hate Dusty as much as the next guy, and believe that at least some of Wood and Prior's problems are related to him. However, there is no reason to jump on him for making a relativity funny and sensible fishing analogy. In fact, I rather like Dusty's personality, and appreciate it when a manager takes the media's attention off the team. Lets limit our criticisms to legitimate grips.

Useless only to those that can't understand a very simple analogy.

or useful to those that understand fishing but not baseball and useless to baseball fans.

if you think the average fan is going to relate to some off-the-wall fishing analogy, you're crazy.

p.s. please stop adding smileys to the end of your posts to make them less offensive.

I think I'm starting to understand why you always express the same opinion over and over again regarding the use of statistics in player evaluation.

I think Dusty was using an analogy that he is familar with and made sense to him.

If at the end of the season all that was wrong with Dusty was his use of fishing analogies, then the Cubs should have a very good season. That will mean they will be competing for the Bass Master, I mean World Series.

The problem with this post was calling someone dumb or stupid in the first place. I always remember the mirror principle, those who call someone dumb need to look in the mirror, then they will see who the really dumb one is.

Disagreeing with someone is OK, but calling someone names is a personal attack and that is not acceptable any time or any place. We see too much of that in politics. Let us try to stay away from that on this forum. I think the posters understand this and that it was just a poor choice of words, nothing else. Enough said. Continue on.

Oh. My. God.

Three pages dedicated to an analysis of a skunk/fishing analogy. And I was dumb enough to read through the whole thing. I think I'm the skunk. Or the fish. Whatever they are...

This thread is a winner.

I don't have a problem with this analogy because I know what he meant.

I'm still wating for an interpretation of this one though:

"It's just like fishing. You're going striped bass fishing. You've got birds on top and you follow the birds. Where the birds are, the bait fish are below that. Below the bait fish are the striped bass. That's what you want to do. That's how you want to do your lineup. That way they can't escape. That's how I try to make my lineup out so the opposition can't pitch around this guy or that guy and that guy and can't escape. You try to get them in the crossfire."

The bait fish are caught in the middle, with the bass below and the birds above. Both will eat the bait fish.

He's just commenting on lineup protection.
