Bump!

I'll be flying out to Chicago for the first time tomorrow morning. I just hope the Cubs can put together a little offense for us when they play SD this weekend.

Thanks to everyone that posted tips in this thread.

Ok...now that I'll be arriving on Tuesday, I have a few more questions.

1. What are some good bars/night spots near my hotel? Since I'm going to some day games, I'd like a few night spots that would make it easy for me to get to without a lot of driving.

2. On Friday morning, I'm checking out of the hotel and going to the Cubs-Sox game. After the game, I'm driving back to Edwardsville. Would I be better off, leaving my car parked at the hotel valet parking and walking to the car after the game and leave from there...or should I try to find parking closer to the park?

3. Any other hints, information, suggestions for an out of towner?

You mentioned where you were staying earlier in the thread (months ago), but you might want to repeat that for people to give you the info you want.

Walk to and from the park and you will see a ton of spots on your way. Go west on School until you hit Sheffield's to get to the aforementioned Sheffield's.

This is a great thread!

I'll be making my first trip to Chicago for the Padres series May 12th-15th.

We're going to have plenty of time to wander around the city during our stay. What are some of the attractions and restraunts we should check out?

thanks guys

Navy Pier, the number one (by attendance) tourist attraction in Illinois.

Millenium Park (and the Park Cafe - very good food).

Various theatres - 'Rent' and 'Wicked' are both playing this year, among others

North Avenue Beach

Take a cruise on the Lake/River

Top of the Hancock or Sears Tower (Signature Restaurant at Hancock is AWESOME, but very expensive.

Seafood - Shaw's Crab House

Pizza - Lou Malnati's (stay away from touristy places like UNO, etc.)

Steak - Chicago Chop House

That's just a few things off the top of my head...

I'll add that if you want a really good steak Ruth's Chris is the way to go!

Nick's Fishmarket on 51 S. Clark for seafood and Lou Malnati's for Pizza.

As I mentioned before, we have stayed in Rosemont a number of times, and the Best Western is not really near the Rosemont stop - from there it would be better to take the free shuttle to the airport, then catch things there. If you would rather use the Rosemont station, the couple of hotels that are fairly near there (that we've stayed at) are:

The Chicago Marriott Suites (probably the closest)

Westin O'Hare

Embassy Suites

None of these places are cheap, but they are nice.

Have a great trip! :)

About how long of an El trip is the Marriot from Wrigley, do you know?

Don't take the El the whole way. Get off the blue line at the Addison stop and take the Addison bus to the ballpark. Give yourself 45 minutes to an hour

3. Any other hints, information, suggestions for an out of towner?

1. If you want bars that are close to Wrigley, I heartily endorse the Goose Island Brewery. It's right on Clark, maybe two doors down from Wrigley. Depending on the type of crowd you're looking for, I would avoid the Cubbie Bear at all costs. It's an over-priced meatmarket that will be packed to the gills that weekend. For something more low-key, I would recommend Guthries on Addison (three blocks west of Wrigley) or any number of bars on Southport St. (five blocks west from Wrigley).

2. Since you're staying that the Lincoln Park Days Inn, I would keep your car with the valet. That way you don't have to deal with all the drivers trying to get to either the Kennedy or Lake Shore Drive.

3. Beware the beds of the Days Inn. I stayed there one night (yes, I live in Chicago. . . but it was for a good cause :) ) and they are horrible. Very springy. Overally, the Days Inn should be nothing more than a place to sleep. Don't expect too much.

You'll also be right across the street from the Lincoln Park Zoo and a block away from Second City. Also, you'll be just a few steps away from where Dusty Baker and Michael Barrett live (I used to live in the building myself.)

Hope this helps!

Baker and Barrett live in the same building?

Yes, the Days Inn is just a place to sleep for me. I'll go to the games early, stay late, and then go back out at night for a drink or two.

Across the street from where Dusty and Barrett live???? Autograph maybe?

Sheffield's is a great spot, but it's not within stumbling distance of your hotel. I'd recommend the Burwood Tap if that's what you're looking for. If you're a blues fan, you've pretty close to Kingston Mines and B.L.U.E.S. on Halsted St. as well.

The Red Roof on Ontario is a really nice hotel IMO. My friends and I are making it our Wrigley trip hotel for the third straight season. Right near the ESPN Zone too.

Depends which room you get. My mom and her friends came into town once and got a room where they honestly couldn't have fallen out of bed if they tried due to the fact that there was a foot of space between the bed and the walls on all sides.

I messed up. I didn't see that you were staying at the Days Inn on Diversey. I thought you were staying at the one on Clark. My bad. In that case, you can't heckle Dusty in front of his home. Sorry about that.

That being the case, I have to change my recommendations somewhat. Duffys on Diversey (just about two blocks east of your hotel) has a great weekend brunch and is good for "sight-seeing" if you catch my drift (of course, you're married and all). Avenue Tavern on Brodway and Oakdale is a great open-air bar (and by open air, I mean the windows are taken out for the summer. Across the street from that is Cesar's a great Mexican restaurant and home of the killer margarita.

You're still only a few blocks walking from the Lincoln Park Zoo and the lakefront, which is by far one of the best views in the world.

Hope these revised recommendations help you out!

Are there any good bars in Rosemont? If not, what bars in Lincoln Park would you guys recommend? Any places have cheap Jaeger Bombs on Saturday nights?

Vance, It is an easy walk, about 20 minutes at an easy pace from clark and diversey. I live a few block west of your hotel at sheffield and diversey and I make the walk all the time, and I will every saturday that they are home this year!

As for parking on the streets. Lakeview is a 383 zone and you do not need any permits to park there before 6 pm. The areas that are LV2, I am not sure about those. I think those are not zoned areas, but need permits only for night games.

Best Pizza in town: D'agastino's on Southport and Addison - about 4 blocks west of wrigley. after that Rinali's on clark and any of the lou malnati's are good.

Dude. D'Agostino's is terrible. The only people I've ever known to stomach it are from out of town.

And to the original question, I know you're parking at your hotel, but if you are planning on getting there early enough to watch BP, you can find a parking space for free within a couple blocks at most.

Also, if you scanned the first 30 pages looking for this topic, that is mighty impressive. Enjoy the game!

I actually like some of D'Agostino's thin crust pizzas.

This might be waaay old, but Do NOT dis D'Ag's. I live upstairs from there the first three years I lived in Chicago and literally lived on that stuff. It was like crack. They would actually just deliver it upstairs to us. With the $5 pitchers we got, many a night was forgotten there.
