Wade Miller, SP CHC

News: MLB.com reports that Wade Miller threw three 15-pitch sessions off the mound Wednesday. He had arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder and started the season on the DL.

Analysis: Miller could return to the Cubs' rotation as a back-end starter by May. Stash him away in deeper NL-only leagues on the DL.

If Miller comes back as filthy as he can be, we're going to have a great rotation.

I don't think he will. It's gonna take him a while, if ever, to get back to the guy who posted ERAs in the low 3's in Houston. I think the best we can hope for out of him is Maddux like numbers, which is still better than Rusch and Williams at this point.

I expect Z to be a legit #1 again. Wood and Prior will put up numbers like a high #2 starter if they are healthy. Miller and Maddux will put up numbers like good #4 starters.

It's still a rotation I'd be excited to see out there on the field, and would feel good about this team's chances then.

It's possible he may not have a spot in the rotation, anyways. Let's hope that with Marshall, Guzman, and Hill, the Cubs can have Miller pitch a bit at AAA before deciding what to do.

Assuming full health from everyone when they return...I expect both Z and Prior to put up numbers that place them amongst the best 10 pitchers in the NL. I'd expect Wood to be the best #2 starter in the NL* -- and he'll be our #3. Maddux should post solid #4 or decent #3 stats. Last year, Miller didn't show much when on the mound. Hopefully, surgery has done more for him this year than rest did for him last year.

* - At least that I can think of offhand. Pitching in the NL is pretty lousy this year. I can't think of a single team that has a dominating #2 guy except the Cubs and possibly Houston if Clemens comes back. I suppose ATL with whichever of Smoltz/Hudson is #2 comes closest.

I'm stretching here, but Pettite maybe? Though not based on his first start.

I'm still not convinced the rotation is the best place for Miller. His last full season wasn't even that good.

Pre-injury, he posted 134, 130, 107, 129 ERA+. That's not too terribly shabby.

But his last full season was that 107. The 129 was in less than half a season. Wood, who is a year younger, put up a 133 in his last full season. I still believe you have to try Wood in the rotation when he comes back, as he's still a little younger and has been a little more dominating when able to pitch.

I'm not begging for Miller to go to the pen, but I think he's a better candidate than Wood.

By the way, for all the Wood and Prior bashing, let's just look at Miller, who has 1 major league season with 200+ innings and is older than both.

I don't think anyone's advocating having Wood in the pen.

Ok, the Cubs guys better than someone who is on his third team in three years and just signed a 1 year $1 million. I do think Miller was a great pickup for the price though.

Prior

Zambrano

Wood

Miller

Maddux

sweet.

While I would love to see it....does anyone think we'll actually see this staff for even one full time through the rotation this year? much less several turns through? Just curious if I'm the only one who doubts we'll see all 5 of those guys at the same time for any extended period of time.

I'm pretty sure they can get 1 time through, and wouldn't be surprised if they go 5. But they're going to have to get Glendon Rusch in there sometime to mix it up with the cra(pp)fty lefty.

I'll take further, I don't believe we'll ever see Prior and Wood in the rotation for one full time let alone the for an extended period. I'll keep hoping and dreaming though...

I predict we'll have both Wood and Prior together for at least the last two weeks in May, and all of June (barring another linedrive off of the pitching arm type of freak injury).

Here's hoping you're prediction is correct.
