blanco/cedeno will hit 7th/8th, so i bet neifi hits 2nd. a lineup w/ blanco, neifi, jacque and cedeno could really suck.

Jones and Barrett have done great against Suppan. Not enough ABs to judge Neifi and Cedeno, or even Blanco... and more than enough to judge Walker

Barrett is 7-15 in his career against Suppan. Especially with the off day today, there is NO way he shouldn't start.

Blanco was Prior's personal catcher last season. He's going to start sometime even with Prior on the DL; I'd guess either tomorrow or Saturday and again during the day-day-day series vs the Reds next week.

I thought Blanco was catching Maddux again?

Well he likely is. But when Barrett is 7/14 against Suppan, and Todd Walker is out of the line-up... you should atleast have some more offense... But with it being opening day at Wrigley, and Dusty wanting to give everyone a turn... Even if we're losing, I see Walker coming into the game. I dont see Neifi going all 9 innings.

Neifi might not have been a great second baseman last year, but he was arguably the best defenseive SS in the league last year. Good range, got fielding percentage, few errors.

Now, hold on a little bit here. Why the hate on Blanco? I mean, sure he somewhat sucked in the 1st half last year, but apparently we're all forgetting his 2nd half from last year, where he had a good 2nd half.

Hopefully Blanco can be able to perform like that. At least he'd be able to throw someone out, unlike Barrett.

As for Neifi starting, well... let's just chalk it up as an "idiotic" move.

Blanco had an amazing July and a typical rest of the 2nd half(based on his 3 year splits). He's 34, are you expecting him to carry over a hot streak that he already lost 9 months ago?

FWIW, Maddux pitched to Barrett the majority of the time last year. Blanco was Prior's personal catcher, and sometimes caught Zambrano when Dusty felt it was a game he may needed a calming force.

No.... but I am expecting to catch most of the games that Maddux pitches.

edit: after reading raw's post and double checking for myself...... Barret caught Maddux 25 times last year, Blanco 10 times. So.... now I'm not so sure Blanco will be starting tomorrow.

For those of you wanting something other than ESPN 1000... it now says that Neifi will start on the Cubs homepage.

And we were worried Dusty would start him over Cedeno....

Just when you thought Dusty couldn't out stupid himself he goes and proves you wrong. And I also guess this means that the reports that Hairston was close to winning the 2nd base job in camp were vastly exagerated...he's 3rd on the depth chart. With Dusty's brilliance we could lose this series badly and never sniff first the entire season....I'd love to have a real manager...or a real pitching staff...jeeze...I'm still wondering how Glendon ended up being our #2 starter on a 100 mill team....I guess that doesn't puzzle me quite as much as not really having a #5 starter at all though....Good luck Neifi....hope you do well...its no use hoping Dusty will see the light as its been 2 years now so we might as well hope you somehow defy all odds and become serviceable.

(Sorry...bit of a rant...can't help myself at this point)

I believe a couple of the games last year that featured Blanco catching Maddux were vs the AL and Barrett DH'd or were while Barrett was nursing a sore shoulder. Dusty was pretty consistent with matching Barrett with Maddux, reportedly in hopes of improving Barrett's game-calling ability.

I like how they announce Neifi as the starter way in advance, as if people will come running to Wrigley from all directions attempting to get tickets to see Neifi play.

If Neifi *has* to play sometime, I actually think having him play when Maddux is on the mound makes the best use of Neifi's only skill.

Wow, Greg "Home Run" Maddux, Neifi and Blanco in the lineup? Maybe I'll just skip the whole game. This could get real ugly.
