If the Cubs lose this one, chalk it up to Barrett, who is THE worst defensive Catcher I've ever seen. Obviously this opinion isn't based on this game, but this game is a microcosm of his career catching. First the passed ball on the fastball, then the terrible throw to 2nd in which he had no business throwing it in the first place and even though it didn't matter on that particular play, but something that I've said in the past that I don't about him, is setting up 2 feet in front of home plate on throws home. This is something he does a lot.

He has the worst catching instincts as well. So, let's all just agree as a whole, cub nation, on a topic that has been disected and debated in the past and that's whether or not Michael Barrett is a good Defensive Catcher. That should be put to rest and we can move to another topic I and many others was right on, I mean we don't agree on.

This one is pretty simple and don't want to offend anyone but if you still think Barrett is a good Defensive Catcher, you are an !diot. Well maybe an idiot is to harsh, but don't know much about Baseball.

Good hitter yes, but terrible Catcher.

I agree. I dont understand why Barrett continues to catch ball games when we play against lineups with the likes of freel, posednik, pierre, taveras in the lineup. he isn't gonna throw them out. Barrett's bat is nice to have occasionally but he's so lazy back behind the plate. He needs more concentration back there. Almost like gets bored with it. It would be nice to see him make defensive improvements like aramis has made after being labeled a horrible fielder. It sure looks like Aramis has worked on his weakness.

Um. I think it's fair to say that Barrett is no wizard defensively. But it's a bit extreme to suggest that he's the worst you've ever seen (unless you've only seen a few catchers, in which case it's you, in fact, who knows very little about baseball), and more than a little self-righteous to proclaim yourself the one true authority on the matter, all the while calling out anyone who has disagreed with you in the past.

yeah, that really pissed me off when he gave up all those walks and home runs.

Pretty bad when defending someone you can't even defend him and go WAY off topic. Game would've been tied if not for Barrett's 2 bonehead plays. This was only the 2nd game folks, get used to seeing this all year.

Get used to the Cubs pitchers giving up tons of walks too, and blaming the catcher instead of the pitcher.

And if Dave Ross catches the foul pop up, Derrek Lee doesn't crush that home run.

If Barrett was supposed to be flawless today, we must also assume that Ross would be flawless as well. So, no, the game would not have been tied if Barrett didn't make those two boneheaded plays. We still would have been down.

Let's think about things for a second. Watching the games, when do you notice a catcher's defense? When he's doing his job, or when he screws up? Even more so than other defensive positions and much like relief pitchers, we notice mistakes a trillion fold more than when they do their job.

let the overreactions begin!

An overreaction can't be something I've said for the past 3 seasons. I find it a little hard to understand how people can actually defend his Defensive abilities. Seriously. Do you actually watch the games? Amazing.

Like I said, very good hitter but c'mon he is a TERRIBLE Catcher. This garbage is nothing new here.

SO again, let's all just agree as a whole and move onto another topic we can easily disagree on and LEGITAMTELY debate, for example whether or not it's impossible for a team to win the Division with Jones hitting 5th in the order.

it's not off topic at all. you said 'chalk this one up to barrett' as if he was the lone reason the cubs lost. that obviously wasn't the case, as evidenced by the walks and home runs.

Hey, I don't like his defense/game calling either, but he's the best we have. You don't want to see Blanco or Soto starting, do you?

So this one game is the conclusive evidence that wins the debate?

Have you watched Piazza behind the plate much?

I've arbitrarily decided for the 3rd year in a row it's impossible to win the division, so no discussing that either.

Holy crap dude, did you really start a topic about Michael Barrett's defense for the sole reason of not debating it?

I take it you didn't watch any Mets games with Piazza behind the plate in the last few years.

No, just for everyone on here who have defended his atrocious Catching abilities and actually think he's good behind the plate to swollow their pride (or pull their heads out of the as$es) and admit he is not only not good, he's plainly terrible.
