Phillips is going to be traded.

Link.

He's lost his job in Cleveland and is out of options. Shapiro says he will be traded. At one time, Phillips was viewes as a blue-chip prospect.

He hasn't had much success in the majors, but he's still only 24. We have a glut of middle infielders, but do we have anything Cleveland would want and would Phillips be worth a gamble?

GM Mark Shapiro said he'll be able to trade Brandon Phillips. It's just a matter of time.

Phillips, thought to be the key to the Bartolo Colon deal, was cut Wednesday afternoon. He lost the race for the utility infielder's job to Ramon Vazquez.

"We're already working with teams and exchanging names," said Shapiro.

The Indians will keep Phillips as insurance against injury until they break camp after Saturday's game against Cincinnati.

I'd like to take a flyer on him, but we'd have to give up someone off of our 25 man to fit him, and Cleveland doesn't seem like they're interested in someone to put on their 25 man unless it's a certain upgrade. They tried to sign TWalk after 03, but I don't think they're still interested.

If Theriot is really going to make the 25 man roster, we could keep him in Iowa and make the trade for Phillips instead. Depending on what we had to give up to get him, it might be a good move.

Probably Theriot himself. Problem solves itself.

I wouldn't give Wuertz for a guy that can't make the team in Cleveland. I'd possibly give them Novoa at best, but I would probably hold onto him for bullpen depth.

And they have Cabrera and Betancourt to push Mota's role back a little bit.

Cleveland might have interest in a bullpen arm. They're counting on Mota and Wickman to be the back end of that pen.

We might could entice them with someone like Wuertz.

Michael Wuertz for Brandon Phillips?

Good grief.

I was thinking more along the lines of swapping former elite prospects - Brownlie for Phillips.

Why give a guy with three (now two) options left for a guy with no options left?

It's water under the bridge, but Wellemeyer for Phillips might have been OK.

It all depends on whether the Cubs see something in Phillips they think they can fix. And whether or not they think Brownlie will ever recover his former self. Depending on the answers to those questions, the move either makes a lot of sense or none.

Personally, I think more of Phillips chances of being useful than I do of Bobby's. But I haven't seen Brownlie this spring and I don't have any idea how he's throwing this year.

Phillips will be waived tomorrow, it's not like he's gonna command a lot in a trade.

Looks like the Reds picked Phillips up today. Rotoworld:

Brandon Phillips - 2B - Reds

Reds acquired infielder Brandon Phillips from the Indians for a player to be named or cash.

An even worse situation for Phillips. When is he ever going to play while behind Felipe Lopez, Tony Womack, Ryan Freel and Rich Aurilia on the middle-infield depth chart? And if he spends the entire year rotting on the bench, it'll only decrease the chances of him ever turning into a useful player. Either Chris Denorfia or Andy Abad figures to be sent down to make room for him. It's doubtful that Phillips will have any fantasy value. Apr. 7 - 3:07 pm et

I guess the Reds are taking a page out of the Cubs' book by trying to acquire as many 2b as possible.

Sounds like the Reds buying cheap, hoping to sell high later in the year.

IF I was a Reds fan, I would be hoping that this means Womack is heading to the unemployment line. Seeing as Freel/Aurilla/Phillips can ALL play 2B/SS and Phillps/Freel would still provide speed. To be honest...Womack simply doesn't have a spot on the Reds, now.
