Grissom's move makes it a near certainty rookie Angel Pagan will make the team as a reserve outfielder. Pagan, who earned an award as the camp's top rookie, began crying Tuesday morning when he found out Grissom had retired, opening up a roster spot.

"My man Marquis Grissom, he made a sacrifice for me, and I appreciate it so much," Pagan said. "He's a credit to the game. He sacrificed for a young guy. What can you say? He's a hell of a man. I've never met a guy like that in baseball."

I don't think this is any cause for joy. Grissom was our only guy who had a realistic shot at making Dusty consider a platoon in RF. Now Jones is secure in an everyday role, which sucks. Pagan won't be any threat to Jones.

Restovich could still be a viable RH threat. Jones everyday does not suck anymore than Jones/Grissom everyday. Marquis sucks, but he could have made the team if he didn't retire. We should be happy he retired.

What I meant was I'm bummed Grissom couldn't reproduce his recent success against LHP and threaten Jones' everyday status. Obviously in light of his severely diminished skills there's no reason to be sad about his retirement.

Oh, well, I never thought he could do much anyway, so I guess that's why I don't find any reason to be bummed.

Thank god. I had a bad feeling if he made the squad. He's a dusty guy and hes not a good guy so I didn't want him playing. He used to be good dont get me wrong, but thank god he retired.

Thank you Grissom. This was the best thing you could have done for the club in your short stay here.

well, he could've convinced Neifi to go in on a summer timeshare in Tahiti...

Not such a great idea with the way Cedeno has been playing this spring.

I heard Dusty on XM today saying how much he liked Pagan and that if he didn't make the team alot of people would be asking him(Dusty) why. Don't know if Grissom had announced yet but I assumed the handwriting was on the wall at that point.

I wish I could have dealt with Marquis Grissom in his prime. He is a class act all the way. Every player in that clubhouse came up to him and wished him well. Grissom spent a lot of time with Pagan this spring, and Pagan was emotionally moved by Grissom's retirement.

Unless someone comes off the waiver wire or a trade is made, it looks as if Theriot has the inside track on a job. Restovich is not on the 40-man roster, making it almost impossible for him to make the team at this point. Pagan is all but a lock. He's had a great spring.

Nice thoughts on Marquis. I'll always remember his role in the 97' Series vs. FL.

Also very glad to read that we are giving these kids a chance. You never know who might turn into something more than you thought he could be.

Pagan looks like he'll make this team. And why not? The best thing the Cubs did this spring was bring a bunch of kids to camp instead of a lot of veteran retreads. They really played hard and left a good impression. I think they also gained a lot from the experience.

Does it seem like the Cubs are more open to using young talent?

Why is that - organizational philosophy change or budget crunch?

No, it has nothing to do with any budget crunch. For a long time, the Cubs didn't have much in the way of young position players. That's changed over the last few years. They've finally got a few they like, and you'll see them get a real shot.

Yes, the article on the cubs mlb site was one of genuine and exuberant praise for Grissom. I'm glad to see Pagan get a shot of course, but his and especially Maddux's praise for Grissom was good to read.

Are Marshall and Hill going to be 4 and 5, respectively? It sounds like Williams isn't assured a rotation spot according to the cubs.com article. I know you asked dusty the other day if Marshall could get the 4 spot and he said no, but da Muskat seems to contradict that. :?

Things appear to be changing fast around here. The other day, Dusty was adamant that Marshall and the other kids couldn't supplant Williams as the No. 4. With Williams being inconsistent, it's possible Marshall could sneak into the No. 4 spot, with Williams, Guzman and Hill being considered for No. 5. Williams could open the season with the big club, but in the pen and getting ready for the No. 5 start on April 15. If he doesn't perform well and if Hill or Guzman excel, things could change again.

Barry Rozner is also saying Marshall can/should get the 4th spot.

With the exception of the early round playoff exit, I'll take it. :D

The best thing about keeping Pagan (besides his name) is the fact he brings plus speed. I assume he's the fastest Cub now, even faster than Pierre.

So much for the all French OF of Marquis, Pierre, Jacque

And for the predictions that Grissom would make the team no matter what. I beleive one of us even agreed to change his/her user name...

:)

And the predictions that Grissom would start over Murton. Talk about pushing the panic button.....
