"I'm at peace with myself," Grissom said. "I feel like the whole world has been lifted from my shoulders."

An emotional Wellemeyer was sad to leave the organization.

"I love the guys on the team and have been a Cubs fan my whole life," he said. "But I think this is for the better."

I know I'm at peace with his retirement. This should allow Theriot to take his spot. So our bench is Mabry, Perez, pagan, Blanco, and potentially Theriot?

It'll be 6 to start. 2 of Walker, Hairston and Neifi will be there, unless Todd is traded. Restovich should make the team as the only RH threat of any kind.

So much for the all French OF of Marquis, Pierre, Jacque

And for the predictions that Grissom would make the team no matter what. I beleive one of us even agreed to change his/her user name...

I think Restovich makes the team over Theriot unless Walker is traded. The trade of Wellemeyer would open a spot on the 40-man for one player which is likely Miller. But, we have some dead weight on the 40-man and Restovich could claim a spot.

Makes sense. If he couldn't make a Dusty Baker team it was time to quit. Too bad. I was really hoping he would hit lefties well enough to make Dusty consider a platoon in RF. Looks like Jacque can breathe a sigh of relief.

Would there still have to be a 40-man roster cut for Restovich AND Miller to get on there?

They should just go ahead and cut Pie to free another spot. It would go right along with some of the other idiotic decisions that have been made over the past several months.

does the Wellemeyer trade open up a spot for Restovich, or does one of the guys we got in return have to be put on the 40 man?

Wade Miller must be placed on the 40-man, so my guess is this trade opens up his spot.

ah. I misread what was written on the previous page. however, I don't see too much dead weight to cut in order to free up a spot for one or the other. Koronka and maybe Reyes.

Glad he hate the guts to call it quits when he felt it was time, because I don't doubt that Dusty would have still wanted him on the team.

Sad still. I liked what I'd heard of him mentoring some of the younger guys this year. I wouldn't mind one bit them finding a job in the minor league organization for Marquis.

Wow...two good transactions in one day, with Wellemeyer bringing someone with potential, and Grissom declaring what we've all known all along. Maybe there is some hope for this season...

I think Aardsma or Novoa could be added to that list depending how things shake out. Novoa wasn't good before getting knocked out for all of spring. If he's not good enough to be on the opening day roster, he doesn't have much value for the team. There are other arms as good or better than him that can be used at the back of the pen.

I don't think this is any cause for joy. Grissom was our only guy who had a realistic shot at making Dusty consider a platoon in RF. Now Jones is secure in an everyday role, which sucks. Pagan won't be any threat to Jones.

Restovich could still be a viable RH threat. Jones everyday does not suck anymore than Jones/Grissom everyday. Marquis sucks, but he could have made the team if he didn't retire. We should be happy he retired.
