Honestly, will people cut Murton some slack at this point? Sheesh!! No one is going to force him to the bench, all the kid does is rake, at every level.

What has he done in a Cubs uniform that DOESN'T inspire confidence? He destroyed minor league pitching last year. He comes up to the bigs and hits over 300 with nearly a 400 OBP. Now this spring, he is playing every day and batting over FIVE HUNDRED.

Oh yeah, he played in the fall league too, and ripped it up there as well.

Dude is not only going to start 150+ games, he will be our 3rd best hitter. I predict he will be hitting 5th in the order before Father's Day is here.

I don't really think it's Murton people are questioning.

I would probably be considered someone that questions Murton. I don't think he has the XBH ability to be a good corner OF.

good point, but you would think that Dusty would have a shred of common sense and let him play.

I know, but still you would think. But of course its Dusty and it is probably to much to ask for.

Murton's power or lack thereof may indeed be the difference between a good corner OF and merely average, but I think that's a somewhat different discussion.

Pena was acquired to platoon with Nixon and provide some late inning defense.

In any event, what benefit would there be for Boston in trading Nixon at this point? What exactly do the Cubs have a surplus of that would benefit Boston?

Boston isn't moving Trot Nixon. Pena is there to play in a platoon with occasional spells to the other outfielders.

Yup.

Nixon 2005 vs. Righties: .288/.364/.483/.847

Pena 2005 vs. Lefties: .291/.345/.536/.881

Nice pickup by Boston.

I could see Boston being interested in Scott Williamson for a late inning, possible closer if Foulke continues to suck.

Wouldn't that have looked nice next to:

Jones 2005 vs. Righties: .268/.348 /.466/.814 and

Jones career vs. Righties: .294/.341/.488/.830

Unfortunately, with the injuries to our pitching staff we couldn't afford to make a deal for Pena. If Wood and Prior had been healthy we might have been able to make a run at him to platoon with Jones and we'd be looking at a future OF of Murton, Pie, and Pena, which is pretty darn good.

Or Baltimore is Ray fails, or Atl if Resitma/Villereal/Cormier fails. The Cubs don't need to trade Williamson just yet, seeing as their is a market for Williamson, just got to wait for it.

Given Williamson's injury history, he probably won't have a market until he's proven healthy for half a year. If he does show he's healthy and still has it for half a year, I really wouldn't want the Cubs to trade him unless someone overpays and we are out of contention.

In any event, Boston had Williamson and has been down the recovery road with him before but it didn't work out. Really don't see them giving up a decent player for him at this point.

I don't know if I would trade a starting pitcher for a platoon guy though, especially a right handed one.

Do you think they would do Jones for Nixon straight up?

I don't think either team would do that.

No kidding, the Red Sox are too smart to make that trade, and the Cubs are too cheap/dumb.

I was being sarcastic to point out the silliness of this discussion. Guess I should have put it in green or blue or something.

I'm with you guys on Glenallen, but man was that guy flat out bad in the outfield....yeesh.

Yes indeed; ironic that Brant Brown was a late inning defensive replacement for Glenallen in the famous "Brant Brown" game in late '98 at Milw.

Both teams traded surplus players. The Reds had surplus OF and the Sox had surplus pitching. Arroyo was set to pitch out of the pen anyway. His value to the Sox wasn't that high. Essentially he was a RP who could become a SP in an emergency. Arroyo's value to the Sox wasn't as high as it was to the Reds. Smart move. At worst the Sox get a compotent platoon partner for Nixon. If Pena ever figures out right handed pitching, they've got a stud to replace Nixon.

I like the acquisition by the Reds too. Good trade all around although I think the Sox came out further ahead, but they both benefitted.
