If the trade's with Florida, my guess is the Cubs get minor league pitching for Walker. That's pretty much the only thing the franchise has to offer.

How come we couldn't ever get decent major leaguers who could consistantly hit .300 for minor league pitching when that was all we had to offer a few years ago?

Too reluctant to trade the pitching. Now most of that pitching has been injured and/or didn't pan out. I blame the scouting dept who hasn't been able to help Hendry recognize when to make a trade or not. The Cubs haven't traded a minor leaguer at their peak value yet.

Sanchez? Beltran?

Choi?

For what's it worth: Levine is reporting that "as soon as the Cubs can trade Todd Walker, they will."

Bruce Miles said (in a game thread i think) a while back that the chances were 50/50 that he'd be with the club opening day. I can't imagine the recent media circus increased the odds of him staying.

If this trade goes down, then it gives both the Cubs and the Os a chance later to complete the following rumored trade:

Tejada for Hill, Pie, Dopirak, and Marmol/Wuertz/Novoa/other prospect.

The Cubs will have cleared an IF spot on the roster for Tejada and the Os will have cleared an OF spot for Pie. The Cubs will have a backup CF (Matos) and the Os will have a backup 2B / 1B / DH (Walker).

trading your third best hitter for a backup center fielder? Grissom could fill that role. Greenberg might warrant a shot. There was plenty of guys on the scrap heap to pick up this offseason to make this trade now would be terrible. I don't want Walker going to the Orioles unless it brings up back some quality prospects or part of a package to get Miggy.

Seems like Baltimore is becoming the dumping grounds for the Cubs garbage. Sooner or later it would be nice if the Cubs got back a decent player.

Just because the Cubs got good return for those guys doesn't mean they were traded at their peak value. Choi was coming off an injury he never seemed to recover from. Hill struggled in the spring and was mediocre in the minors before he was traded. Sanchez had thrown horribly in the spring and his control was fading even more so than before. Jones was injured at the time he was traded.

I'll give them Beltran. He was at his peak value having some ML success. Brendan Harris could go either way as he didn't get a chance in the majors to show what he could do, nor did he completely tank in the minors.

I don't know that I would trade Pie for Tejada at this point. I think Felix has shown he has a decent shot of being more productive (OPS wise) than Tejada in the not-too distant future.

If we're going to trade Walker to Baltimore... we better get some Brian Roberts in return! (Hendry can do it. You know it)

I never understood the argument that the Cubs fail to trade there players at peak vaule. If they did trade them at peak vaule then the argument would be that the Cubs don't vaule there young talent or give them enough of a shot. The Cubs have a pretty good return on the guys they have traded lately.

He'll probably trade Prior for Roberts who'll develop a case of missing elbow.

Jerry Hairston is a backup who can't stay healthy a whole season and the only place Walker has value is on this board.

Walker has played in 129 and 110 games the past 2 years as a Cub. So he hasn't exactly been the epitome of great health. It's not as bad as hairston but claiming he plays most to every game every year isn't completely true.

Walker wasn't a full-time player in 2004, and the knee injury early in 2005 was from a collision with Carlos Lee at second. His playing time these past two seasons isn't really the result of being injury prone.

Sounds like there's some concerns about Walker's knee.

Surprising no one has mentioned that Matos had a higher obp than Pierre in 05. :) Sounds like a much better bench option than Grissom.

If the Cubs keep Pie, then who goes in 2007? Jacque or Juan?

With this morning's headlines, it might be time for the Prior for Tejada trade.

You know, the more I think about it the less I mind getting Luis Matos, just hate that it would have to be Todd Walker going, but it's better than just getting Low-A prospects or something.

He did alright against lefties last season.

.297/.368/.466/.834

He would seem acceptable as a platoon partner for Jones...

Of course, Grissom might (with might being the key word) give you similiar production against lefties, and he won't cost you a dime.

My guess is one might have been Walker and a pitcher (maybe Wellemeyer) to the Rangers for Soriano, but when the Rangers got Wilkerson + that deal was nixed.

Another could have involved the Mets or Mariners. When Boston had interest in Reed a Walker + Patterson for Ibanez may have been close.

How did the Cubs not receive peak value for Choi? Could they have possibly done any better than Derrek Lee? I don't think so.

He didn't say they didn't get peak value, he said he wasn't traded "at his peak value". And let's not forget that Lee was an average first baseman when the Cubs got him. Nobody else was going after him because teams that could afford him either had first baseman or wanted better first baseman. DLee circa 2005 was nothing like DLee the rest of his career.
