Why would we need another pitcher? He's a decent pitcher but I don't see him being any better than Miller and marginally better than J Will. But with Prior and Wood...

Anyway, I have read a few places this is definitely happening, as well as us looking at Graffanino. Here is a blurb from the Boston Globe on it:

Boston Globe: "Arroyo drew a crowd of scouts yesterday in Boston's 7-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates at City of Palms Park, including some from the Rangers, Braves, Reds, Cubs, and Brewers."

I wouldn't mind the Cubs going after another pitcher, but it would have to be a top 3 rotation type of arm. Arroyo, would be the Cubs 5th best starter....and that's NOT including Wood and Miller.

If the Cubs are gonna get a starter, I would love for them to be able to get a guy like Zito (though, no starters are likely moving this late in the season). I would love them to package guys like Williams, Hill, Ryu, etc. and get a top of the line arm. Not just for this season, but for next when the Cubs lose Maddux and Wood.

If Boston trades Arroyo, that would be a nice slap in the face since he took less money to sign with them.

I already think we have a logjam of arms....so I don't know where he fits exactly.

Maybe Arroyo might be part of a package with Graffinino for Walker, Welly, plus someone else. It could be part of a 3-team trade involving Walker & Welly. Everyone assumes Walker will be traded and Welly is out of options, so it would make sense to package these two.

I'm not sure anyone is going to trade a bag of balls for Wellemeyer. Maybe some old used ones. He's been pretty bad for pretty much his whole MLB career and teams know he's going to get released. He gone.

He could conceivably clear waivers and be sent back to AAA. He's not necessarily gone (although I think it's more likely than not).

I don't see Walker going back to the Red Sox. They are all set at second with the acquisition of Mark Loreta.

Grafaninno is more valuable to them than Walker since he can also play short and third on occassion.

I was unaware he took a paycut, that does kind of put a hole in this possibility. But it wasn't just the Cubs scouting him, it was a few teams, so there has to be some truth to it.

By saying he took less money, I didn't mean that he took a paycut, just that he signed a longer deal for less money than he could have gotten if he hadn't signed it. His agent did not want him to sign, but Arroyo said he signed it because he wanted to remain a Red Sox.

I'd love it cause we still need another starter to start the season. I think at least at the start of the season it would be a good addition to a rotation thats is questionable rotation.

-We don't need another starter in the rotatoin at the start of the season. Without Wood and Miller, we still have Z, Prior, Williams, Maddux, Rusch, Hill and Guzman. That's 7 starters. Even if you throw out Guzman it's still 6.

-If you consider what we have now to be questionable, I don't see how adding Arroyo-who's only better than Rusch, and even then it's not that big of an improvement-makes us any better. Arroyo isn't that good. He's just young. If you put his numbers on Kansas City, you wouldn't want him. He put up a 4.3k/9, and a 4.52 ERA last season. In 2004, he was 7.15 k/9 and a 4.02 ERA. He's just average.

I don't know; old used balls may have too much sentimental value for somebody.

We probably COULD get an autographed Jose Macias card for Welly, though. :D

I don't know what "scouting" means, and I don't want to start any conspiracy theories, but it makes me wonder what the Cubs are not saying about the million dollar arms of Wood and Prior.

I know, I know, but it is fair to speculate, no?

All this stockpiling of starting pitching is starting to worry me.

I have one and no I won't trade it to you for Wellemeyer. Sorry. It's part of a set.
