I especially like this part:

"I have a bigger mouth than all of these youngsters, and I think that puts me at a distinct advantage," Rolen quipped.

"Volume, that's it. Quantity, not quality. The more you get in your mouth, the better you're going to be."

Rolen's biggest bubble, using Big League Chew gum, was measured by teammate Sidney Ponson at 11 1/2 inches. That outdid the top kids competitor, Ashley Perry of Moore Haven, Fla.

Rolen's got a dry sense of humor. The other day he said he was "sweating like a ..., well not a pig, because pigs don't sweat, that's why they wallow in the mud." (paraphrasing)

That was an obvious one, but kudos all the same.

Indiana University senior infielder Ryan Parker, who is battling Hodgkin's disease, received a surprise visit from Cardinals third baseman Scott Rolen. Indiana baseball coach Tracy Smith told Rolen about Parker's plight and Rolen was happy to offer support. "I was hoping for just a note or a phone call," Smith told the Indiana student newspaper. "Once Scott found out, this is just the type of guy he is, he just asked, 'Would he mind if I came down and spent the afternoon with him?' I didn't ask Scott for that, he just volunteered." According to Parker, Rolen stayed for an afternoon to talk baseball and to encourage him to keep fighting.

Rolen is great for the game.

I've always had a great deal of respect for Rolen, he's one few of players in the game where you & Little League player could follow him around the park from the time he arrives till the time he leaves after the game and not say, "I would've done that different".

He would've made a great teammate on the Cubs.

I feel the same way about D Lee.

Oh come on people, now is not the time to discuss his greatness, the dude is talking about stuffing large quantities in his mouth. More should be made of this.

I don't know why he's practicing with large quantities, unless there's group related "activities" afterwards. :?

Large quantities...that must be a reference to Ponson.

Well when I saw the title of the thread and even moreso when I read what it was about, I immediately wondered how long it would take for someone to make a Jim Edmonds joke. And to nobody's surprise, not long at all!

I can't believe someone would stoop to something that low.

Gay jokes and fat jokes, all on one page. How clever and original.

Agreed, but I do have to say, there's a difference in pointing out someone's weight in terms to baseball and making fun of him.

As far as Ponson...

He should be in much better shape and there's only 2 possible reasons why he got that big. 1)He has a complusive personality 2)He's lazy

I would be worried if Ponson was brought in to be the teams #3 pitcher. He's competing with 2 other major league ready prospects for the 5th spot so if he pitches well that's great, if he doesn't then it's not that big of a deal.

It's kind of like the situation with the Cubs. If Wade Miller does well it's a bonus, but you're season isn't riding on it.

Agreed, but it still doesn't take away the fact that Ponson is just trying to latch onto a team and has fallen far in just two years b/c of Ponson. He has no one to blame but himself for his freefall.

If Ponson showed a better work ethic as more self-control, he wouldn't be in this position.
