I'm not worried about us playing Italy and Czech Republic.

I am. Italy's younger stars have looked very good of late (plus Totti looks like he'll be 100%), and the Czechs have Nedved.

Sorry, allow me to rephrase that. I'm not worried about us playing WELL against Italy and Czech Republic. Whether we win or not is another thing. I am worried about how well we play vs Ghana.

Ok, now I completely agree with you.

I'm really glad to see Bobby Convey in there - he's had a cracking season, and a couple of the goals he's scored.... amazing.

The World Cup is a far higher level than the Coca Cola Championship, but its good he's got a chance.

Now that I've had some time to digest the roster, let me offer up some thoughts:

Ching over Twellman isn't as shocking as I initially thought. Ching had played decently in early qualifiers and IIRC tied a game away late vs Jamaica. Twellman didn't do anything in games that meant something, or in difficult enviroments. He looked totally outmatched.

Putting O'Brien on the squad seems silly, even if he comes all the way back and is healthy, he hasn't had signifigant game action for a long time. Plus, I'd much rather see Dempsey out there most of the time. I know he can drop him for an alternate up to the day before their 1st game, but still...

Ben Olson shouldn't play a single minute, but I'm glad Arena resisted the Berhalter/Zavagnin temptation.

I hope Frankie Hejduk doesn't play much.

Convey is a great choice to back up Beasley.

Other than that, it's a pretty vanilla roster. 11 MLS players out of 23 is't bad. We'll see what lineups Areana trots out in the send off series.

I read a good post on another message board speculating that Ching is simply a backup target man for McBride.

Yeah, it's doubtful he'd play unless McBride got hurt. Wolff would probably be subbed in before Ching would.

So when do these 2-0 we don't know how much longer the games are going to end because of some things that went on during the game thingy going to start?

you're drunk, aren't you?

Is he talking about injury time?

As an aside, I wish they'd bring back the Golden Goal...

Injury time...that's it! I don't understand that deal at all.

They take the time where the game was not played during that 45 minute period due to injuries and substitutions and add it onto the end, making the half 45 minutes of actual playing time.

I don't get why it's a mystery though. The announcers don't seem to know how much time is left in the match.....why the confusion?

the referee keeps the official time on the field. it used to be that the offical time was not announced. However, most leagues now have the 4th offical put up a signboard saying how much time will be added on nowadays.

The official time is kept on the field by the referee. He has a stopwatch, and starts and stops accordingly.

At the end of each half he's supposed to inform the 4th official approx. how much time is left, and that's announced on TV and to the crowd. Most officials will go over this estimate if one side or another is in the attacking 1/3 of the field. They won't end the game during the run of play when a team is in a scoring situation.

Italy got lucky on that one. The fact that Vieri was even being considered was a total farce. They'll be much better off with Lucarelli (or inzaghi) on the roster than Vieri.

Also, Luca Toni, who will be starting up front, has scored 30 goals in Serie A this year, the most in 65 years or something like that.

I got my #22 Onyewu WC jersey from an ebay seller in Thailand yesterday.

Sweet on the jersey. I'm trying to track down a Dempsey kit myself.

Vieri isn't a good player anymore, so I'll agree that it's a blessing for them that he got hurt. I still don't fear Italy as much as I fear the Czechs, though.

Also, there's speculation that O'Brien could be replaced on the US roster by Steve Ralston as early as Monday.

I got mine from this guy on ebay. he'll customize it with whatever name and number you want (EDIT: looks like he doesn't have those auctions anymore, but there are some Dempsey jerseys listed on there). Took ~3 weeks to get here from Thailand.

I got the XL and it fits me pretty well (I'm 6', 190 lbs)

Are those jerseys really $22? That seems super cheap to me...

it is super cheap. I'm pretty sure they're the same replica jerseys that ussoccer.com sells for $70, though.

Real good article about Donovan in the newest ESPN the Mag. When asked about leaving Germany, he basically said it wasn't worth it for him to be miserable in Europe even though he could further his game more than staying stateside.

Just wanted to say that everytime I see that US Soccer commerical (the one to the tune of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame"), I get so pumped up for the World Cup. I consider myself a casual soccer fan, I love going to games, I try to keep up with what is going on overseas, but I could barely identify 20 international players with their current clubs. But I would consider myself a bigger fan then 90% of the US, and that commercial puts a charge into me everytime I see it.

After watching his awful, awful performance today, I take back everything good I said about France if Jean-Alain Boumsong gets a WC roster spot.

Boumsong got a spot. Also, out of the 4 good young defenders I named (Mexes, Silvestre, Christianval and Zebina), only one got a roster spot.

I will now bet against France.

I'm gonna be in Hamburg during the games, so I really look forward to seeing the experience. I'm not going to any games however, just want to see the scene.
