Anyone catch the interview? I beleive it was on Rob Dibble and Kevin Kennedy's show. The only thing I heard about it was Roy Firestone calling in after and saying how Stone should be a GM and Dibble agreeing with him

I caught the tail end of it. He came on just as I was getting out of the car to pick my daughter up from day care and was finishing up as we were leaving the day care.

He made some snide comments that he didn't think the acquisitions of Howry, Eyre, and Jones would leave the Cardinals quaking in their boots.

He said that if Wood and Piro combine for 65 starts, the Cubs will win the division, but then said pigs had a better chance of flying than Wood and Prior making that many starts.

I enjoy the channel also and get lots of laughs listening to Dibble. The bonehead was talking about "Wrigley Stadium" the other day.

I bought a Delphi-Myfi portable unit the other day, I can switch from listening on my computer to my car and even record shows and listen to them later. I love it. Home plate is a station where they talk about baseball 24/7, how can anyone not love that. I love it. I heard the whole interview with Stone it was good for the most part, he thinks that the Cardinals will have to play down to the Cubs level for them to win the division. He thinks we are better but only a little bit better. He talked about Sosa and his own playing days, over all it was a great interview. Steve is a great baseball mind and I really miss him on Cubs broadcast. I miss him as much as I miss Harry.

My love for stoney usually colors my bias in these types of discussions, but I fail to see how this is a snide comment. Do you really think these additions (particularly the almost universally criticized acquisition of jones) improve the Cubs enough to surpass the Cardinals? I sure don't.

My wife got me one of these for Christmas...I knew I loved that woman for a reason! It is awsome, 24 hour baseball, all the games, uncensored comedy, and not having to listen to the local st.louis sports radio guys...its a wonderful thing.

a comment need not be false to be snide, and Stone's comment was snide, as was the additional "pigs fly" comment about Prior/Wood starts. there's a way to convey these thoughts without the the sarcasm and without the taint of vindictiveness that have laced most of his comments since leaving the Cubs.

as for whether the Cubs surpassed the Cards with the moves they made, I don't think they do in and of themselves. but with the downgrades the Cards will probably see ... right and left (worse players), center (he's getting old), shortstop (career year), second (worse players), the starting staff (Suppan's career year, Carpenters 2005 workload on surgically repaired arm, replace Morris with Ponson/rookie, Marquis back to mediocrity), and a completely revamped bullpen.... the difference isn't as great as Stone implies.

maybe the Cards aren't shaking in their boots, but I guaranty they don't have the confidence they had going into last year. but Stone and his vindictiveness just isn't capable of making such analysis anymore when speaking about the Cubs.

If you get DirecTV, I think that channel is in the nosebleed section.

800's IIRC.

but HomePlate isn't on the DirecTV basic package. it's an upgrade

Sorry, wouldn't know for sure. I have the "every channel for one extremely high price" package.

It will be a sad day when Cubs.com removes 2004 video highlights from their site. I miss Stoney, and his 3-times-a-game, always-prophetic "another slider in that same spot and this inning is over" comments.

HomePlate is on Channel 878 (with Total ChoicePlus)

Yeah. That's why I get it. I went with the "Plus" package.

If I'm not mistaken, Stone is brought on a show to give his opinion. If his opinion is that the Cards won't be shaking in their boots or that pigs will fly along with a healthy Wood and Prior......so what? It's his opinion. I don't know why so many Cub fans take what he says as a personal affront.

If I'm not mistaken, and I am not, Stone was the consumate professional and always diplomatic throughout his analyst career, until 2004. suddenly his sarcasm is biting, his tone sharp, and his opinions expressed in manor that does not merely state his opinion, but takes swipes at one organization in particular. the differencec is obvious.

It could be one reason why his knowledge is so well-respected, yet nobody is willing to offer him a shot at GM. He definitely likes to hold a grudge----though I do think he got a raw deal from the Cubs. After all, the only thing he did was compliment Oswalt's performance at Wrigley. Why that set the whole organization off I will never know.

2004........the ultimate nightmare season in so many ways.

Don't get me wrong, I still like Stony and think he's one of the best analysts in the game, but his comments now are usually flavored with his distaste for the Cubs. Last year, it was "Wood will be pumping gas if he doesn't change his delivery." Now, it's the "pigs will fly."

How did Stone get a "raw deal" from the cubs? He turned down an offer by the organization to extend his contract (even though Carey was leaving). He chose to leave and has been bitter ever since.

Stone may have chosen to leave, but only because Chip was pushed out the door by the Cubs. Personally, I think the Cubs forced both out. I don't think it's coincidence that the so-called "divisive" broadcasters left along with every other Cub that caused any problem at all in 2004 (Mercker, Alou, Sammy, et al.)
